Senior / Utility Consultant

Location - London, Bristol, or Birmingham

We are seeking an experienced utilities or energy professional to join a growing advisory team delivering infrastructure and low‑carbon energy solutions across the built environment. The role can be appointed at Consultant or Senior Consultant level, depending on experience.

You will support projects from early feasibility and development planning through to post‑planning delivery, helping clients understand utility constraints, network capacity, energy demand and the infrastructure required to support new and existing developments.

Projects will include major developments, education estates, commercial property and public‑sector schemes, with significant client exposure and collaboration across engineering, sustainability and the wider built environment.

Role responsibilities and requirements

• Develop utilities and energy strategies from feasibility and concept design through masterplanning, planning and later project stages.
• Obtain and interpret utility asset information, assessing existing infrastructure to identify constraints, risks and development opportunities.
• Undertake electricity, heating and water demand calculations to establish capacity and infrastructure requirements.
• Assess network capacity and advise on new connections, reinforcement, diversions and potential onsite generation solutions.
• Coordinate with network operators, developers and project teams on connection strategies, infrastructure changes and delivery requirements.
• Evaluate renewable generation, battery storage, smart energy systems and other low‑carbon technologies for integration into developments.
• Prepare feasibility assessments and technical appraisals covering utilities, energy, sustainability and decarbonisation opportunities.
• Produce clear technical reports, drawings, recommendations and client‑facing deliverables that turn complex findings into practical advice.
• Build effective relationships with clients, architects, engineers, planners, consultants, network operators and other stakeholders.
• At Senior Consultant level, you will also lead projects and client relationships, support junior colleagues, contribute to proposals and business development, and help improve internal approaches to smart energy and sustainable infrastructure.

Key skills and qualities needed

• Experience in utilities, energy, MEP, civil engineering, infrastructure, sustainability or another relevant built‑environment technical discipline.
• A practical understanding of utility infrastructure and how network constraints influence development.
• Knowledge of renewable energy, low‑carbon systems, network connections or utility infrastructure planning.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with confidence interpreting technical and consumption data.
• Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical issues to non‑technical audiences.
• A collaborative, proactive approach and genuine interest in energy transition, sustainability and net‑zero development.

For Senior Consultant level, candidates should bring several years of relevant experience, proven project and client management capability, strong technical knowledge of utilities or renewable energy systems, and the confidence to mentor less experienced colleagues and contribute to team leadership.
