We are seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer to join a nationally recognised, award-winning building services consultancy known for technical excellence and leadership in sustainable MEP design. This senior role sits within a growing practice and offers the opportunity to lead complex projects, shape technical direction, mentor teams, and play a key role in delivering low and net zero carbon solutions across commercial, public sector and healthcare projects.
Role Responsibilities and Requirements
- Lead the mechanical design delivery of projects across commercial, public sector and healthcare sectors
- Act as a senior client-facing technical and commercial lead
- Manage and coordinate mechanical design teams, mentoring and developing junior engineers
- Support senior leadership with project planning, resourcing and commercial performance
- Contribute to business development, bids and long-term client relationships
- Deliver high-quality mechanical designs using IES / IES-VE, AutoCAD, MagiCAD and Revit
- Ensure compliance with all relevant standards, legislation and energy efficiency / net zero carbon targets
- Provide technical leadership on healthcare projects, including guidance on sector-specific requirements
- Work closely with other engineering disciplines to deliver coordinated, integrated designs
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, balancing programme, quality and commercial objectives
Key Skills and Qualities Needed
- BEng or MEng in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services
- Chartered Engineer status
- Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. MCIBSE, MIMechE)
- IHEEM membership
- Strong UK healthcare experience with working knowledge of HTMs and HBNs, or transferable experience (e.g. cleanroom or laboratory design)
- 5–10+ years’ UK-based post-graduate experience within a building services consultancy
- Proven expertise in mechanical building services design across multiple sectors
- Strong commercial awareness, including managing project budgets and financial performance
- Excellent project and workload management skills across projects of varying scale and complexity
- A confident, professional manner with clients and internal teams
- A proactive, positive approach with the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities
