We are seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer to join a well-established, award-winning building services consultancy recognised nationally for technical excellence and leadership in sustainable MEP design. This is a senior role within a growing practice, offering the opportunity to lead complex projects, influence strategy, mentor teams, and play a key role in delivering low and net zero carbon solutions across commercial, public sector and healthcare sectors.
Role responsibilities and requirements
- Take full responsibility for the mechanical design delivery of assigned projects, primarily within commercial, public sector and healthcare sectors.
- Act as a key client-facing lead, providing technical and commercial advice.
- Lead and coordinate mechanical design teams, supporting and mentoring junior engineers.
- Support senior leadership with project planning, resourcing and commercial management.
- Contribute actively to business development, bidding and client relationship growth.
- Provide technical leadership on healthcare projects, including mentoring teams in sector-specific requirements.
- Collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines to deliver coordinated design solutions.
- Produce high-quality mechanical designs using IES / IES-VE, AutoCAD, MagiCAD and Revit.
- Ensure designs meet all relevant standards, legislation and energy efficiency / net zero carbon objectives.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, balancing delivery, quality and commercial performance.
Key skills and qualities needed
- BEng or MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services.
- Chartered Engineer status.
- Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. MCIBSE, MIMechE).
- IHEEM membership.
- Strong UK healthcare sector experience, with a working knowledge of HTMs and HBNs, or transferable experience such as cleanroom or laboratory design.
- 10+ years UK-based post-graduate experience within a building services consultancy.
- Proven expertise in mechanical building services design across multiple sectors.
- Strong commercial awareness, including monitoring project financial performance.
- Excellent project management skills and the ability to lead multiple projects of varying scale and complexity.
- A confident, professional approach with clients and colleagues.
- A proactive, positive, can-do mindset and flexibility to adapt to changing priorities.
