While working in accordance with NHS England’s Widening Participation and Talent for Care strategies, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is delighted to support individuals with the potential to flourish in the NHS by offering insights into various careers. We have a well-established work experience programme primarily aimed at students in school years 11-13; however, you are welcome to get in touch if you are considering a career change later in life.
All clinical placements are purely observational (no hands-on tasks) and are fully supervised. Placements run for 5 days, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). No weekend exposure is permitted. Students must be at least 16 years old to participate, and certain departments may have additional age restrictions. The majority of placements are for those planning to apply to medical school, but opportunities are available for everyone, as there are hundreds of roles within the NHS.
Current Situation: We are excited by the high level of interest from our local communities in NHS careers. In 2024, we hosted over 500 work experience students, with thousands of enquiries received. All places for the current academic year are filled, including all dates up to August 2025. We are now inviting interest for placements between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026. Requests outside this period cannot be considered.
Our team will respond via email based on your interests, which may take up to 3 weeks. Application forms are processed in order of submission, including any cancellations that create new availability. Due to high demand, early application is advised to avoid disappointment.
We provide student-friendly advice and guidance on the 350 different NHS roles, with interactive quizzes, real-life stories, and videos for those starting their NHS career journey. Additional guidance on planning a career in the NHS is available.
