Grade Band 7. Permanent, term‑time (37.5 h per week). Salary £55,524‑£62,652 per year (pro‑rata). Location: Perseid school, Morden. Closing date 27 July 2026.

Job overview

The post holder will provide specialist occupational therapy services for children and young people with severe and complex learning difficulties in Perseid special schools, in line with the Service Level Agreement for Sutton Health and Care Alliance.

They will develop the special schools occupational therapy service, plan and deliver specialist assessment, advice and treatment, and work autonomously with children, families, school staff and the wider health team to support social, emotional and educational participation.

Main duties of the job

• Provide a highly specialist level of clinical skill in complex paediatric occupational therapy.
• Produce Education, Health and Care plan assessments, high quality reports and reviews within statutory time‑frames.
• Use standardised and non‑standardised assessments, interview and observation to identify needs, set goals and plan intervention, addressing education, functional skills at home and community participation.
• Recommend, provide and advise on provision of equipment, demonstrate and train clients/carers, and maintain safety through regular checks.
• Monitor intervention effectiveness via goal setting, outcome measurement, evaluation of practice and communicate results to relevant parties.
• Assess the need for small aids and specialist equipment (e. g., specialist seating, upper limb splinting, toilet aids) and recommend appropriate solutions in line with service criteria.
• Measure, supply and monitor the use of specialised upper limb orthotics (hand splints).

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

• Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
• Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
• Registration with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
• Evidence of attendance at short courses to develop specialist skills.

Experience

• Specialist knowledge of paediatric occupational therapy or relevant transferable skills from other settings.
• Experience working with children and young people with complex needs, ASD, neurological conditions, coordination disorders and functional needs.
• Experience assessing for equipment provision such as specialist seating and splinting.
• Experience with equipment prescription principles in a paediatric setting.
• Experience mentoring, supervising, managing or supporting junior staff/assistants/students.
• Experience delivering occupational therapy within a special school setting.

Skills / Abilities / Knowledge

• Sound knowledge of clinical practice and delivery of occupational therapy services within a specialist environment.
• Good organisation/time‑management skills and ability to prioritise workload effectively.
• Knowledge of standards of record keeping and principles of clinical governance.
• Ability to perform manual handling tasks.
• Teamworking and ability to promote collaborative multi‑agency approach.
• Evidence of own self‑development through appraisal, CPD and portfolio.
• Ability to support and develop other team members.
• Professional engagement in specialist sections.
• Membership of relevant specialist groups such as the Children, Young People and Families specialist section of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.
• Additional requirements

Appropriate UK professional registration.

Sanctioned DBS check and knowledge of safeguarding responsibilities.
