Locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. The ICU consultants work 1 in 9-person rota on an annualised job plan. The 9-week rota typically includes:

  • 7 days as the consultant of the week in St Helier ICU (08:00-18:00h daily, with overnight on-calls at weekends)
  • 5 days in Epsom HDU (08:00-18:00h)
  • 5 second on-call shifts in St Helier ICU working alongside the Consultant of the week (08:00-21:00h on site, 21:00-08:00h on-call from home within 30 minutes travel distance)

Responsibilities

  • 10 PA contract: 8.3 DCCs; 1.7 SPAs (including revalidation, educational supervision, and clinical governance).
  • Contribute to our weekly Morbidity and Mortality meetings, monthly ICU Consultant and Clinical Governance meetings, and divisional Quality and Audit meetings.
  • Assist with our teaching programmes, including bedside echocardiography and simulation training.

About the group and units

St George's, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George's Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.

We are seeking motivated and enthusiastic people to join our dedicated team in Critical Care, for six months. Our team consists of 11 consultants, 24 junior doctors, and over 100 nurses and AHPs in our two Critical Care units.

About the units

  • St Helier ICU: 13 beds, providing full level 3 and 2 care.
  • Epsom HDU: 6-8 level 2 beds.
  • Annual admissions: 1400 patients, including 700 emergency medical patients, 350 emergency surgical patients, and 350 patients following complex elective surgery.

Specialties and Collaboration

We support all general specialties and admit patients from regional Renal, Haematology, and Oncology units. Our in-reach service helps our hospitals achieve the trust's mission statement of "delivering outstanding care every day". We are part of the South West London Adult Critical Care network (SWLACC).

  • Education: Accredited for FICM Stage 1, 2, and 3 training. We are developing CESR-training pathways in collaboration with St George's Hospital. We aim to expand our echocardiogram and simulation training. The ICU team also provide education to other teams outside ICU and undergraduates from St George's Hospital Medical School.
  • Innovative environment: We provide a 7-day, 24h critical care outreach service in St Helier Hospital and aim to expand this to Epsom by Summer 2026.
  • Supportive team: We provide an in-reach service to the Medicine department, while also collaborating with Anaesthetics, Surgery, Emergency, and Renal departments, and other regional ICUs.
