Salary: £67,325 - £77,348 Plus on-call allowance

Job overview:

The post is suitable for individuals seeking a career as a specialist shoulder surgeon and has an excellent track record of candidates progressing to Consultant posts in the UK and overseas. Candidates should have completed higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics including relevant experience in the subspecialty of shoulder and upper limb. Possession of the FRCS(Orth) or equivalent and full GMC registration are essential. Candidates must have achieved the CCT and be eligible for entry on to the UK Specialist Register prior to commencement of the post. Individuals who do not possess FRCS(Orth) or equivalent and a CCT need not apply.

Main duties of the job:

• Conducting outpatient clinics (seeing a mixture of new and follow-up patients) under supervision of the consultant and independently.
• Assisting in the operating theatres and conducting parallel lists with the consultant when appropriate.
• Running the upper limb trauma service, ensuring patients are appropriately prioritised for surgery in close co-operation with the Trauma co-ordinators.
• Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting and referred to the subspecialty.
• Supervising foundation doctors, core trainees (or junior fellows) and SpRs in the day-to-day management of Upper Limb Elective and emergency orthopaedic inpatients.
• On-call 1:12 weekend rota.
• Assisting in a weekly fracture clinic.

Qualifications and Training:

• GMC registration
• MRCS or equivalent
• FRCS(Orth) or equivalent
• CCT
• Diploma or other qualification in Orthopaedics

Clinical Experience:

• Good standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty.
• 6 years experience at SPR level.
• At least 12 months experience in Shoulder and Upper Limb Surgery.
• Experience in dealing with general orthopaedic trauma.
• Experience in arthroscopy.

Teaching/research:

• Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
• Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems.
• At least 2 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
• Experience of submitting abstracts and presenting at National/ International meetings.

Management & Administrative:

• Computer skills with familiarity in working with data, spreadsheets and presentations.

Language:

• Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements.

• Commitment to CPD.
• Highly enthusiastic, self-motivated and willing to go the “extra mile”.

Other requirements:

• Good physical health.
• UK driving license with own transport for travel between working sites.
