A fixed contract position for a Paediatric Junior Sister (Band 6) is available at Epsom Paediatric ED, requiring 23 hours of work per week. The role involves providing specialist paediatric nursing support and participating in in-house Paediatric Crisis SIM courses with guidance from a Paediatric PDN specific for ED.
Salary: £45,953 - £54,254 per year pro rata (including HCAS, outer London).
Main Duties:
- Professionally accountable for standards of practice as set by the NMC Code of Professional Standards of practice and behaviour.
- Undertake the nurse in charge role for the department.
- Supervise, support, and educate team members, including nursing and medical students.
- Ensure safe and effective clinical practice and enhance patient experience.
- Promote and implement trust policies and deliver organisational objectives.
- Advocate for children and families using professional expertise, knowledge, and judgement.
- Observe changes in patients’ attitudes, behaviours, emotional states, and physiological observations, reporting findings to relevant healthcare professionals.
- Maintain clinical skills and competencies specific to the post, including triage, venepuncture, intravenous cannulation, ECG monitoring, NG tube insertion, and administration of IV fluids, medications, and blood components.
- Recognise and act to avoid situations detrimental to patients' health and wellbeing, escalating issues as required.
- Responsible for the correct administration and custody of medicines according to Trust Policy.
- Supervise planning and coordination of admissions/discharges and episodes of care, promoting safe and effective discharge.
- Encourage and utilise patient feedback to improve patient experience.
- Safely administer medication under patient group directives and triage care for children and young people attending the department.
- Undertake pain assessments and evaluate interventions.
- Collaborate with clinical colleagues, safeguarding teams, and external partners to safeguard children and young people.
- Follow current infection control advice and seek specialist support as required.
Person Specification:
- Registered Nurse – Child (RSCN/RNC) with current NMC registration.
- Experience within an acute or emergency Paediatric setting.
- Effective shift coordination and management of patient care within an acute or emergency Paediatric setting.
- Module in relevant specialist area (e.g., children’s emergency nursing module) and a degree (or working towards) in a relevant health subject.
- Experience of Paediatric emergency nursing at a Band 5 level.
- Mentorship, teaching, and assessing experience.
- Advanced competency in nursing skills, e.g., triage and assessment, plastering, IV/Capital Nurse, central line management.
