Job overview
The Hepatology Surveillance Nurse (Band 6) will collaborate closely with the nurse manager and the Band 8 nursing team to establish and implement a nurse‑led liver surveillance pathway. This pathway supports patients with stable, compensated liver cirrhosis who are at risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) across various outpatient settings in Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust.
Responsibilities
- Conduct patient assessments and order diagnostic investigations, including blood tests, ultrasound scans (USS) and fibroscan.
- Review blood and ultrasound results, provide lifestyle advice, signposting and education, and deliver tailored patient support.
- Document and update the liver surveillance database and spreadsheet using Microsoft Office, NHS Net and local databases.
- Coordinate six‑month diagnostic testing and monitor patient progress throughout the surveillance pathway.
- Deliver nurse‑led HCC surveillance clinics for stable compensated cirrhosis patients.
- Obtain consent, provide psychological support and act as patient advocate throughout the process.
- Ensure timely access to USS surveillance for patients at risk of liver cancer and help manage care transitions to specialist services.
- Collaborate with the Gastroenterology/Hepatology multidisciplinary team (MDT) to facilitate timely presentation and transfer of patients when cancer is detected.
Qualifications and experience
- Math and English GCSEs or equivalent.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience using IT software such as iCLIP and Dictate.
- Knowledge of Gastroenterology / Hepatology and ability to analyse blood results.
- Strong prioritisation skills and evidence of independent, accountable working.
- Commitment to continuous professional development.
- UK professional registration appropriate to the role.
