Locum Consultant in Ophthalmology for Cornea & Ocular Surface in Carshalton

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Ophthalmologist, with a special interest in cornea and ocular surface disease. The successful applicant will support the development of the keratoconus service and support the ocular surface, acute eye services and have the opportunity to provide consultant level cataract and ocular surface surgery, depending on the experience of the applicant. An interest in ocular surface oncology would be advantageous. The post is offered for 12 months in the first instance, pending formal substantive appointment. There is no on-call commitment with this fixed-term post.

The post is based at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, which serves South West London and Surrey. The Corneal and Ocular surface service provides clinics at St Helier Hospital and Epsom General Hospital. The Acute Eye service is based at the St Helier site. The successful candidate will join a team of 14 Consultants with dedicated subspecialty interests. There is one theatre list per week with this post.

Main duties of the job:

• This post is for a part-time Fixed term Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in cornea and ocular surface disease.
• The post holder will work alongside the wider cornea and acute eye service team.
• The post holder will be required to work across both sites and the role may change depending on service needs.
• There is no on-call commitment within this 6.5 PA job plan, but there may be an opportunity to increase PAs in the future to include on-call commitments.

Person specification:

• Qualifications and Training: Must be on the Specialist Registrar, hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT/CCST) or be within 6 months of obtaining the CCT. Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. FRCOphth or CCST equivalent. Post CCST Fellowship.
• Clinical experience: Experienced in running busy corneal and ocular surface clinics. Experience of working in a busy Acute Eye Casualty Service. Clinical training and experience and ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients. Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in the sphere of cornea.
• Management and Administration: Has attended recognised management training or will have such training on completion of CCT/CCST. Ability to contribute to change management. Experience of and participation in departmental audit. Understanding of issues relating to service organisation and development.
• Teaching and Research: Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. Experience of supervising junior doctors. Ability to teach clinical skills. Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems. Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
• Personal: Ability to establish good working relationships with staff and communicate well with patients. Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements.
