An opportunity has arisen for an experienced, dynamic, self-motivated nurse to join the gastroenterology team at St Helier Hospital to support the inflammatory bowel disease service. This is an exciting and varied role, working within a multi-disciplinary team providing a high level of support to patients. The right individual will have the opportunity to lead, develop and shape the service provided to patients within this speciality and be encouraged to share areas of good practice. The role includes the planning, teaching and organisation of patients with complex needs as well as serving as a resource to all disciplines on matters pertaining to IBD; this includes activities such as audit, quality and risk management initiatives. The successful applicant will have extensive experience in an acute setting, caring for patients requiring advanced nursing skills for their long-term health conditions. Excellent organisational, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills are required for this role. This post will be based at Epsom Hospital.
Main duties of the job:
- Develop a quality driven service to all patients treated at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust with particular focus on St Helier Hospital.
- Take a leadership role within the Trust and be responsible for the development of innovative nursing practice within the IBD speciality.
- Facilitate the development of other nurses to benefit patient care and serve as an educational resource to all members of the Trust-wide multidisciplinary teams (MDT) regarding the provision of care.
- Help to promote and co-ordinate a seamless pathway of care from diagnosis through treatment for patients with IBD.
- Adopt a collaborative approach with the MDT to provide a comprehensive patient-focused service.
Person specification:
Education / Qualifications:
- Registered professional (NMC) with evidence of regular updating.
- Nurse practitioner qualification or equivalent Level 6/7.
- Evidence of significant professional development with a focus on IBD / Gastroenterology.
- Non-Medical Independent prescriber and able to prescribe biologics.
- Counselling skills training.
Experience:
- Substantial experience and achievement in an advanced nursing role with gastroenterology or IBD patients.
- Experience of working collaboratively within a multiprofessional team environment.
- Experience of managing a patient case load in an NHS setting.
- Highly developed specialist knowledge, underpinned by theory and experience.
- Experience of developing clinical guidelines and clinical care pathways.
Knowledge & Skills:
- A commitment to nursing and an awareness of issues influencing current and future nursing and healthcare practices, and the ability to think through the implications for healthcare.
- Transformational leadership and innovative approach to service delivery.
- Ability to co-ordinate IBD care.
- Good knowledge of IBD drugs & side effects.
- Ability to analyse complex information and provide a range of options to share information with the wider team.
- Ability to utilise research and audit to develop practice in self and others.
