Flood Risk Engineer – Epping, Essex

Full‑time, temporary 3‑month contract (potential extension). Pay £40‑£45 per hour. Closing date Monday 19 January 2026.

Role Purpose

To be the technical specialist delivering Council services across flood risk analysis, reviewing flood risk assessments, SuDS designs, responding to planning applications and contributing to management of flood storage assets. To challenge consultants and developers to design effective drainage systems that comply with local and national planning policy, legislation and Council statutory obligations. To be a knowledgeable expert in SuDS systems and monitor and assess new and existing drainage systems across large residential sites. To ensure the Council meets statutory obligations and maintains the highest standards of probity and good conduct.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Contribute to technical delivery of flood risk management, land drainage and review of SuDS systems.
  • Reduce flood risk and challenge inappropriate drainage systems through planning applications to protect the district and its residents.
  • Undertake practical work such as lifting manholes, inspecting drainage systems, monitoring flood risk assets.
  • Make routine decisions regarding site visits, inspections and public enquiries.
  • Cross‑train and assist other team members where required.
  • Maintain high standards of record keeping and attention to detail.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Relevant professional degree or demonstrable equivalent work experience in flood risk engineering, drainage or environmental protection.
  • Good understanding of safeguarding issues.
  • Experience in an organisation of comparable scale and complexity.
  • Track record of providing an efficient, effective, confidential and professional flood risk assessment service.
  • Proven IT skills – MS Office, GIS mapping systems.
  • Knowledge of MicroDrainage / InfoDrainage would be an advantage.
  • Understanding of Council financial and procurement processes.
  • Reasonable understanding of current issues facing local government.
