We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join a small, highly experienced Epicor Labs team that transforms innovative AI concepts into enterprise-grade products trusted by enterprise customers. This is a hands-on engineering role, not a management position. You will design and build, set the technical bar for production quality, and provide the architectural judgement needed to take AI-driven products from promising prototype to something enterprise customers can trust with their business data.
What you'll do
- As a Principal Engineer, you'll play a key role in designing and delivering the next generation of AI capabilities across Epicor's ERP portfolio.
- PoCs and MVPs in AI transformation projects inside enterprise ERP software - rapid exploration of new capabilities, with the engineering discipline to evolve the successful ones into production-grade services.
- Cloud platform services - designing and building the services, APIs, and data layers that new AI capabilities run on, integrating with large, established ERP products.
- Production readiness - bringing R&D output up to enterprise standard: reliability, observability, security, multi-tenancy, and safe failure behaviour.
- AI engineering - integrating LLMs and agentic patterns into business software responsibly: guardrails, permissions, auditability, and designing for the probabilistic nature of AI components acting on real business data.
- Raising the bar - architectural review across the team's workstreams, mentoring engineers at all levels, and turning good judgement into standards and automation rather than tribal knowledge.
What you are likely to bring:
- Principal-level engineering depth in C#/.NET and/or Python, with cloud platforms (Azure preferred), and a strong record of designing and shipping production services. Our systems span both stacks - strength in one with working fluency in the other is the expectation.
- Production TypeScript/JavaScript frontend engineering experience, including building secure, accessible user interfaces that integrate with enterprise web shells, APIs and backend services.
- Experience designing and integrating enterprise information systems, with a strong understanding of data flows, system boundaries and the operational impact of change.
- Ability to work effectively with data scientists and other AI specialists to turn data, models and experimentation into reliable, usable product capabilities.
- Production ownership experience - you have run systems in production and carry the instincts that come from it: partial failure, resilience, blast-radius thinking, and designing for the incident nobody planned. This matters to us more than any specific framework.
- Distributed-systems fluency: service boundaries, transactional thinking, multi-tenant design, API design and versioning.
- Strong architectural communication - able to explain, document, and defend design decisions across teams, and to review others' designs constructively.
- Pragmatism under real-world constraints: comfortable integrating with large, long-lived enterprise systems and choosing the achievable-good over the theoretical-perfect.
Highly desirable:
- Hands-on exposure to AI-assisted engineering - building with LLM APIs, agentic coding tools, and prompt-driven workflows, and a grounded view of where they help and where they don't.
- Experience taking early-stage products (PoC/MVP) to production, ideally in enterprise software.
- AWS experience.
- Complex business-domain experience - ERP, e-commerce, finance, logistics - and an appreciation of the cost of getting business data wrong.
- Security instincts: least privilege, tenancy isolation, trust boundaries.
What success looks like
- Within your first 3 months, you'll: Deliver production-quality code, Own components from design through implementation, Contribute architectural improvements across the team.
- Within 6–12 months, you'll: Lead the design of major platform capabilities, Become a trusted technical leader and architectural reference point, Mentor engineers and help raise engineering standards across Epicor Labs.
