Epic is looking for an experienced Lead Technical Artist to join the Fortnite Battle Royal Team. Candidates in this role will manage and mentor a team of Technical Artists and communicate and collaborate with various other departments in establishing goals and tasks for new features. You will identify potential risks in plans and highlight them early with the team to problem solve. This person will work closely with Gameplay Programmers and Designers to create and implement new technical features from start to finish.
In this role, you will:
- Work with complex landscape material, water systems, foliage and composition
- Manage and mentor a team of technical artists, provide art direction and feedback on tasks
- Optimize art content to ensure features are performant on all supported platforms (Console, handhelds, mobile)
- Work with production to plan, scope and provide estimates for tasks and create tickets in Shotgrid
- Follow up with tasks, providing direction and problem solving
- Collaborate with gameplay developers, artists, and other team members to deliver stellar visuals for each map
- Collaborate with Art Leads to create shader and blueprint solutions for complex assets and provide proto models and guidance on how to approach creation of these assets
- Work with procedural generation tools to ensure maximum efficiency when it comes to populating complex environments and automate time consuming processes
What we're looking for:
- Strong experience with Unreal Engine or other real-time game engine technologies
- Skilled in authoring materials and shaders using node-based graph editors or HLSL
- Proficient in Blueprints and other programming or scripting languages
- Proven leadership as a departmental lead, managing technical artists and collaborating closely with all art departments
- Proficiency with 3D modeling tools such as 3ds Max, Maya, or similar software
- Experienced in texture creation using tools like Substance Designer and Substance Painter
- Hands-on experience with procedural modeling and simulation tools, such as Houdini
- Expertise in optimizing art and gameplay content across multiple platforms (console, Switch, mobile)
- Contributed to shipping cross-platform content on consoles, Switch, and mobile devices
- Led the development of gameplay features, collaborating closely with design teams to drive creative direction
