ABOUT THE ROLE - OVERVIEW
We are rapidly growing with increasing demand for both our products and our expertise.
To support this, we are expanding our engineering team and seeking a highly motivated Propulsion Test Engineer to join us on a permanent basis.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in the development and validation of our electric propulsion systems.
The role is critical to accelerating our testing capabilities and advancing our technology readiness.
Working closely with our core team, you will take ownership of test campaign execution, data analysis, and system integration.
You will be the hands-on technical expert responsible for ensuring our propulsion systems perform reliably in representative environments.

As a key member of a small team and one of the first hires, you will have the chance to shape the direction of our testing operations and contribute directly to the success of our mission.
The role requires a practical engineer with strong technical skills, a systematic approach to problem-solving, and the flexibility to adapt to ambitious and evolving project timelines.
This role is based at our lab space in the University of Surrey with hybrid working arrangements (minimum 3 days on-site per week, with flexibility on remaining days).
Note: Unfortunately, due to difficulties with visas we are only able to hire candidates with a right-to-work in the UK.
ABOUT THE KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties will include but not be limited to the following
- Lead the planning, setup, and execution of electric propulsion system test campaigns in vacuum chamber environments
- Configure and operate test instrumentation including, thermocouples, flow meters, and thrust measurement systems
- Build, assemble, and integrate propulsion system hardware (Xenon flow control systems, power processing units, thrusters) for test readiness
- Analyse test telemetry and interpret results to provide actionable feedback to the design team
- Generate comprehensive test reports documenting methodology, results, and recommendations
- Develop and refine test procedures and operational protocols to improve testing efficiency and repeatability
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues during test campaigns, implementing corrective actions as required
- Contribute to design reviews with practical insights derived from test experience
- Identify and procure specialist components and equipment to support test campaigns
- Contribute to the development of test requirements and verification matrices
- Support the transition of technology from development to qualification and flight readiness
- Collaborate with the wider engineering team to continuously improve our testing capabilities
ABOUT YOU - SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree (MEng/MSc) in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline
- Understanding of electric propulsion technologies including Hall Effect or Gridded Ion thrusters
- Experience with data acquisition systems and test instrumentation
- Strong practical skills in hardware integration and system assembly
- Ability to analyse test data and produce clear, concise technical reports
- Methodical approach to problem-solving with strong attention to detail
- Understanding of safe working practices in laboratory and test environments
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively within a small engineering team
- Familiarity with Lab VIEW, Python, MATLAB, or other data acquisition and analysis software
- Ability to adapt and perform in a fast-paced environment where quick-learning is key.
- Be responsible and proactive in an engineering environment as well as being able to honestly report on both successes and failures.
- Doctorate degree in Engineering, Spacecraft Propulsion, or related field
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with vacuum chamber testing of electric propulsion systems or similar space hardware
- Practical experience working with high-pressure gas systems (Xenon, Krypton, or similar inert gases)
- Experience with electric propulsion system fluidic components including pressure regulators, flow control devices, and thermal management systems
- Familiarity with ECSS standards or equivalent aerospace quality frameworks.
- Understanding of control loop design and system analysis
- Knowledge of cleanliness and contamination control requirements for electric propulsion systems
- Experience with test facility design and commissioning
- ABOUT THE WORK ENVIRONMENT - CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties will be performed in a mixed environment with periods in standard office settings, electronics laboratories, cleanroom facilities, and vacuum test chambers.
The role requires working with high-pressure gas systems, high-voltage equipment, and vacuum technology.
The successful candidate must be able to work in a safe and conscientious manner in areas with known hazards.
- While performing the duties of this role, the employee will be required to:
- Work in laboratory and test facility environments with appropriate personal protective equipment
- Perform manual handling activities including lifting and moving equipment
- Work in environments with elevated noise levels requiring hearing protection
- Work around high-pressure gases, lubricants, solvents, and cleaning fluids
- Use PC equipment for data analysis and reporting
- Occasionally work outside standard hours to support test campaigns when required
