Gas, Heating & Plumbing Engineer (Commercial / Domestic to Commercial)

Company: A Leading Contractor

Location: Based in Boroughbridge (Travel throughout Yorkshire & surrounding areas)

Salary: £18 - £20 per hour (Negotiable DOE) (Paid Weekly) + £100 on-call bonus + £100 per call out + Company Van & Fuel card

Contract: Full-Time / Permanent

The Role

We are recruiting for a skilled and ambitious Gas, Heating & Plumbing Engineer to join a well-established maintenance and refurbishment company. The business is growing massively and is now looking for the right candidate to spearhead and lead their brand-new Gas division. This role is focused almost entirely on Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive breakdown repairs, rather than heavy installation or installation project work. Working primarily across care homes, schools and vet practices, you will be responsible for gas safety, plumbing compliance, heating efficiency, and rapid reactive repairs. The contractor is currently seeking to become a Gas Safe Registered company. Therefore, we are looking for someone who is already Commercially Gas Safe registered, OR a strong Domestic Gas Safe registered engineer whom the company will fund through a 1-week intensive changeover course (CODNCO1) to achieve their commercial certifications.

This is not a standard construction site role. We need a professional who combines technical excellence in both gas and plumbing with the soft skills required to work in occupied homes among vulnerable residents, requiring a high level of discretion, cleanliness, and a high standard of customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the lead engineer to get the contractor’s gas and mechanical division off the ground, ensuring all plumbing, heating, and gas work meets safety and Gas Safe standards to help the business achieve its company-wide registration.
  • Execute planned preventative maintenance schedules on commercial and domestic gas appliances, heating systems, and general plant room/plumbing infrastructure.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair urgent faults, including boiler breakdowns, heating system failures, hot/cold water issues, leaks, and general plumbing repairs within educational and care facilities.
  • Ensure all gas and plumbing installations are safe, compliant, and operating efficiently, issuing safety certificates where qualified.
  • Daily travel to varied sites throughout Yorkshire and surrounding counties is required. You will report to the Boroughbridge office for briefings/materials, with occasional overnight stays for distant jobs (allowance provided).

The Ideal Candidate

Because this role involves sensitive environments, your "bedside manner" is just as important as your technical skill. You must be reliable, hardworking, and take pride in providing quality maintenance work while working quietly and respectfully around elderly residents. You must be equally comfortable switching between a gas boiler service and a reactive plumbing repair, and possess the commercial mindset and ambition to help build a department from the ground up.

Requirements:

  • Ideally Gas Safe registered (Domestic or Commercial)
  • Proven background in mechanical maintenance, PPM schedules, plumbing fault-finding, and reactive repairs. SVQ/NVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing and Heating (or equivalent time-served experience) is highly desirable.
  • Must hold or be willing to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.

What's on Offer

£18 - £20 per hour with weekly pay cycles, plus highly lucrative on-call bonuses (£100 standby + £100 per call out).

  • Company van and fuel card provided.
  • Full funding for your Domestic to Commercial changeover course, plus ongoing training and development.
  • A long-term, secure position within a supportive and growing team focused on maintenance over major install projects.
