Envo Talent is working in close partnership with an established international renewable energy owner and developer as it continues to expand its UK battery energy storage portfolio. The business develops, builds and owns assets for the long term, with battery storage playing a central role in supporting grid stability, renewable integration and flexible energy markets. As project activity accelerates, the company is strengthening its in-house technical capability. This role has been created to bring deeper engineering ownership across battery storage projects, from early feasibility through to commissioning and operational optimisation.
Role overview
As Battery Energy Storage Engineer, you will take a hands-on technical role within the energy storage team, supporting the full lifecycle of utility-scale BESS projects. You will work across modelling, grid compliance, system design, commissioning and performance analysis, collaborating closely with development, commercial and operations colleagues. The role sits in an owner-operator environment, offering exposure to real assets rather than consultancy-only work, with genuine influence over how battery systems are specified, delivered and optimised.
Responsibilities and duties
- Develop and maintain electrical, thermal and economic models for utility-scale BESS projects
- Carry out performance simulations, degradation analysis and techno-economic assessments
- Evaluate battery chemistries, PCS, BMS and system configurations to inform design decisions
- Support grid connection studies and dynamic modelling
- Ensure compliance with UK grid codes and standards including G99 and relevant IEC and IEEE requirements
- Support integration of battery systems with solar and wind assets
- Support and oversee commissioning and acceptance testing activities
- Validate performance data against design and contractual requirements
- Work with EPC contractors, OEMs and integrators to resolve technical issues during construction and energisation
- Support root cause analysis and optimisation of operational BESS assets
- Provide technical input into investment cases, RFPs and technical due diligence
- Work with commercial teams to support revenue optimisation across frequency response, capacity and trading markets
- Monitor technology trends and supplier developments within the BESS sector
Professional qualifications and experience
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Systems, Physics or a related discipline
- Typically 3 to 7 or more years of experience working with battery energy storage systems
- Proven experience in BESS modelling, system analysis or commissioning
- Strong understanding of PCS, BMS and control strategies
- Working knowledge of UK grid connection processes and grid codes
- Experience using tools such as Python, MATLAB, PowerFactory, PSCAD or DIgSILENT is beneficial
Personal attributes and behaviours
- Analytical and detail-focused with strong engineering judgement
- Comfortable managing multiple projects and priorities
- Collaborative and practical approach to problem solving
- Confident communicator with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Motivated by contributing to the energy transition through real infrastructure delivery
Salary and benefits
- £60,000 base salary
- Annual bonus
- Flexible and hybrid working model
- Exposure to international renewable and energy storage projects
- Long-term career development within a growing owner-operator platform
