To support the classroom teacher and take a lead role in ensuring high-quality learning outcomes for all pupils within a safe and supportive environment. The role involves providing personal care, therapeutic interventions and safeguarding at all times. On occasion, and in the absence of the teacher, the postholder may be required to lead learning or take on additional responsibilities appropriate to the role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as class cover (HLTA level) during short-term teacher absence or PPA time.
  • Hold specific responsibilities as required, such as communication lead, resource management, therapy lead (under professional guidance), moving and handling, or behaviour support.
  • Support pupils’ progress and development by enabling full access to the curriculum.
  • Follow guidance from the class teacher to support individual learners effectively.
  • Adhere to individual care plans, support needs and medical interventions, including (but not limited to) gastro feeding and administering medication, completing all required training.
  • Ensure pupils are moved in line with written manual handling plans and raise any concerns with the Therapies Manager.
  • Prepare classrooms and shared areas with appropriate resources and displays as directed.
  • Engage with pupils during lessons and social times, promoting independence and communication in line with curriculum aims and Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Develop positive learning experiences and build strong, constructive relationships with pupils.
  • Encourage cooperative working, social interaction and full participation in activities.
  • Promote positive behaviour, values and attitudes in line with behaviour policies, supporting pupils to take responsibility for their actions.
  • Promote independence, self-reliance and self-esteem.
  • Contribute to pupils’ health, wellbeing and emotional development.
  • Support equality, diversity and inclusion, ensuring all pupils have equal access to learning opportunities.
  • Support additional activities including swimming, school trips and transport duties where required.
  • Deliver individual therapy programmes under therapist guidance (including Physio, SaLT, OT and specialist feeding programmes).
  • Build professional relationships with parents and carers in consultation with the class teacher.
  • Provide general administrative and clerical support to the class teacher as needed.
  • Promote and support the use of ICT within the learning environment.
  • Attend all required training and apply learning to daily practice, modelling good practice to colleagues.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people, reporting concerns in line with safeguarding procedures.
  • Follow all Health & Safety procedures to ensure the safety of pupils and staff.
  • Carry out playground and other duties as directed.
  • Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the setting.
