Overview
As Site Manager at Ham Wall, you lead a flagship wetland reserve within the Somerset Wetlands National Nature Reserve to deliver conservation excellence and outstanding visitor experiences. You will guide a team of staff and volunteers, ensuring habitat and species management align with the reserve and broader landscape goals. You’ll oversee day-to-day operations, budgets, and compliance while building strong relationships with the local community and partner organisations. This role offers the chance to influence nature recovery at scale and shape a welcoming, inclusive visitor experience. Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day operations for habitats, species, people, visitors, finance and legal compliance
- Inspire, lead and develop a team of 5 reserve staff and 100 volunteers
- Review, update and implement the reserve management plan and business plan
- Act as main point of contact for local community, neighbours, and partner organisations
- Collaborate with area manager, ecologists, a rural surveyor, safety advisor and other specialist RSPB staff
Key requirements
- Understanding of species and habitat needs and ability to apply ecological principles
- Experience in land or habitat management with practical techniques
- Experience supporting visitor operations and public engagement
- Awareness of health, safety and environmental compliance and ability to follow processes
- Experience supporting staff or volunteers and fostering an inclusive team
- Clear and respectful communication with colleagues, volunteers, partners and visitors
- Ability to motivate and guide others and develop skills in a team
- Ability to support project and budget delivery and contribute to financial/resource planning
