Overview
In this role you lead day-to-day management of WWT Slimbridge’s 320-hectare wetland reserve, delivering habitat management, species monitoring, and people leadership. You’ll oversee volunteers and placement students, support visitor experiences, and contribute to long-term habitat management and conservation initiatives. The position sits at the heart of wildlife-friendly stewardship that aligns with WWT’s mission to restore wetlands and connect people with nature. You’ll work with experienced colleagues to show tangible, positive impact on nature and communities.

Responsibilities
- Manage habitat restoration and practical conservation work on the reserve
- Monitor wildlife populations and ecological indicators
- Lead, supervise, and develop volunteers and placement students
- Engage visitors through talks, events, and on-site engagement
- Support conservation projects and long-term reserve management
- Balance fieldwork with planning, record-keeping and compliance
- Coordinate with colleagues across sites as needed
Key requirements
- Practical conservation or land management experience
- Ability to identify and monitor wildlife with strong field skills
- Experience leading or supporting volunteers
- Confident communicator with diverse audiences
- Organised, proactive, and capable of balancing fieldwork with admin
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to other WWT sites
- Willingness to work outdoors, weekends, bank holidays, and some evenings
