Overview
In this role you provide strategic ecological expertise across a portfolio of major, long-term projects, shaping ecological approaches and translating biodiversity objectives into practical delivery. You will work with project managers and delivery teams to turn plan-level aspirations into on-the-ground action that benefits nature. The role combines technical ecology with strategic, client-facing delivery on large programmes and offers variety through selective broader ecological work. Responsibilities
- Provide strategic ecological input across major, long-term client projects
- Collaborate with Project Managers to understand client objectives and shape ecological approaches
- Translate biodiversity and land management objectives into deliverable plans and actions
- Establish ecological baselines, constraints and opportunities across sites
- Develop biodiversity strategies, action plans, habitat management and monitoring frameworks
- Identify opportunities balancing ecological benefits with operational, regulatory and commercial needs
- Define ecological scopes and plan programmes, resources and specialist input
- Coordinate ecologists, specialists, subcontractors and partners
- Work with Land Management and delivery teams to implement recommendations
- Use monitoring and project learning to inform future action
- Support tenders and proposals for major clients
- Undertake ecological surveys, assessments, reporting, QA and other consultancy work as needed
Key requirements
- Strong professional ecology experience including habitat assessment, surveys and mitigation
- Understanding of biodiversity, habitat management and nature recovery
- Experience developing ecological strategies and long-term outputs
- Experience working with clients and multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to interpret ecological information for priorities and interventions
- Experience coordinating ecological work with other specialists
- Knowledge of wildlife and environmental legislation and professional practice
- Strong technical report writing and communication skills
- Good judgement balancing ecological outcomes with project needs
- Relevant degree or equivalent professional experience
- Associate or Full membership of CIEEM or willingness to achieve
- Full UK driving licence
- Experience in major infrastructure, utilities, transport, large estates or long-term environmental programmes is valuable
- Experience of BNG, habitat management and monitoring, GIS and spatial analysis, protected-species work and landscape-scale nature recovery is advantageous
