Traffic management is changing. Advances in intelligent transport systems, real-time data, connected infrastructure and network monitoring are transforming how highway authorities manage increasingly complex transport networks.
At Kirklees Council, we're looking for a talented Engineer to join our Urban Traffic Control team. Whether you're looking to build on existing experience or develop specialist skills in traffic signals and Intelligent Transport Systems, this role offers an excellent opportunity to work with innovative technology and contribute to the future of transport in Kirklees.
This is an opportunity to work across a diverse and complex highway network, supporting around 1,934km of roads and a network of 257 traffic signal sites, whilst helping to develop the next generation of Urban Traffic Control technology. You'll work with experienced colleagues on traffic signals, intelligent detection systems, traffic monitoring technology, communications infrastructure, and wider network management systems that support the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across the borough.
This is more than a traditional traffic signals role. It's an opportunity to develop your expertise within a forward-thinking Highway Authority that uses technology, data, and innovation to meet the transport challenges of the future.
About the Role
As an Engineer within the Urban Traffic Control Team, you'll support the management and development of a specialist portfolio of traffic signals, UTC systems, intelligent detection systems, traffic monitoring technology and communications infrastructure.
You'll be involved in the design, operation, maintenance, renewal, and optimisation of traffic signals and associated technology, together with asset management, incident response, and the delivery of technology-led improvements across the highway network. Working closely with experienced colleagues, regional partners and industry specialists, you'll help improve road safety, journey reliability and network performance whilst developing your expertise in Urban Traffic Control and Intelligent Transport Systems.
You'll gain experience across a range of technologies, projects, and operational challenges, with opportunities to contribute to day-to-day network management and the delivery of innovative transport technology solutions.
What We're Looking For
We're seeking a motivated and technically minded engineer who is keen to develop their skills and contribute to the delivery of modern traffic management and Intelligent Transport Systems solutions.
- You should have:
- A relevant engineering, technology or transport-related qualification, or equivalent demonstrable industry experience.
- Experience of, or a strong interest in, traffic signals, Intelligent Transport Systems, highways, transport technology or related engineering disciplines.
- Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- A willingness to learn, develop, and apply new technical skills.
A full UK driving licence.
What We Offer
In return, you'll join a friendly and professional team delivering projects that make a real difference to how people and goods move across Kirklees.
We offer:
- Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, supported by flexi-time, helping you achieve a healthy work-life balance.
- Generous annual leave entitlement.
- Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme
- Ongoing training, professional development and career progression opportunities.
- Huddersfield town centre office base, conveniently located close to bus and rail stations.
- Health and wellbeing support, employee discounts, Cycle to Work and Travel Pass schemes, and a range of additional staff benefits.
Why Kirklees?
- Be part of a forward-thinking Highway Authority investing in innovation and smarter network management.
- Develop your expertise in Urban Traffic Control and Intelligent Transport Systems.
- Collaborate with experienced colleagues, regional partners, technology providers, and industry specialists.
- Contribute to projects that have a direct impact on residents, businesses and the travelling public.
- Work across a diverse network of urban centres, strategic routes, and rural communities, providing varied and rewarding engineering challenges.
- Join a service that values collaboration, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
