Illegal waste exports is a strategic priority crime type for the Environment Agency that attracts high profile attention from government, media, national and international stakeholders.

As part of your comprehensive induction, you will be provided with all the equipment required for your role.

As a Grade 3 Regulatory Officer, within the Illegal Waste Exports (IWE) Team, you will be taking on an exciting and challenging role, working at pace to deliver outcomes that prevent harm to legitimate businesses and safeguard our communities.

You will be assisting with the compliance and risk assessment of Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of overseas recovery facilities for waste exports. The intelligence you capture could be what connects an offender to an environmental crime.

We are expecting further roles within this campaign to become available in the near future.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. Full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role. This may attract an additional payment.

The team

IWE sits within Batteries, WEEE and Shipments (BWS), which is a part of Environmental Markets & Regulation (EM&R).

BWS regulates, monitors and enforces against activities of packaging producers and exporters of packaging waste, as well as preventing the export of illegal waste under Article 18 controls. BWS comprises of several teams encompassing various roles and disciplines, building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external partners, aiming to work as one regulatory and enforcement community.

  • Ability to represent the Environment Agency professionally with a variety of different partners.
  • Ability to prioritise and plan own work and manage time effectively to meet objectives and deadlines.

  • Skilled in the use of standard IT packages, systems and databases to enter, record, and retrieve information efficiently and accurately.
  • Pro-active in your approach and confident in using your initiative.
  • Good team working skills and an approach that is inclusive to everyone you work with.
  • Law enforcement, intelligence or handling sensitive data experience is not essential. If you have such relevant experience, please tell us about it in your application.

You will need to be comfortable with working in a dispersed team. The Environment Agency utilise a hybrid working approach, including office and home working. Regular travel within your base area and travelling for training and meetings including overnight stays is expected.

The role involves handling of sensitive information and will require successful vetting checks.
