We are looking for an experienced Senior Design Engineer with a strong background in HV electrical networks up to 33kV to join our growing team.
This is a senior technical role where you will take ownership of 11kV/33kV electrical designs, supporting renewable energy projects and associated network connections from initial feasibility and tender stage through to detailed design and construction.
You will lead the development of technically robust and practical design solutions, working closely with clients, DNOs/IDNOs and internal project teams to ensure designs meet technical, regulatory, safety and delivery requirements.
If you have strong experience in HV infrastructure, substations and cable design and are looking for a role where you can take greater technical ownership of projects, we would love to hear from you.
This is a hybrid role with flexibility depending on location. Our preferred office base for this position is our Scotland HQ. We are looking for someone who can work from one of our offices at least 3 days per week, or attend for one full week at a time if primarily remote-based.
Role Responsibilities:
- Take technical ownership of 11kV/33kV HV electrical designs, from concept and feasibility through to construction.
- Lead the design of HV substations, including layouts, protection & control, earthing, auxiliary systems and associated cable infrastructure.
- Review and check engineering drawings, calculations, specifications and technical documentation.
- Produce detailed engineering drawings, including single line diagrams, GA layouts, schematics and wiring diagrams, using AutoCAD.
- Coordinate with civil and structural designers to integrate substation infrastructure and cable routes.
- Liaise with DNOs and IDNOs, ensuring designs comply with relevant ENA, BS, IEC and network operator standards.
- Prepare bills of quantities and support cost estimates in collaboration with the estimating and tendering teams.
- Develop construction design packs incorporating internal and third-party design input.
- Identify and mitigate design risks throughout construction, operation and decommissioning.
- Provide technical input into tenders, client meetings and design reviews.
- Provide technical guidance and support to project and delivery teams.
- Ensure designs meet applicable health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
- Maintain current knowledge of HV industry standards, regulations and best practice.
What We're Looking For
- Degree in Electrical Power Engineering, or HNC/HND with significant relevant HV design experience.
- At least 5 years' experience in HV electrical design, ideally at 11kV/33kV or above.
- Demonstrable experience taking technical ownership of substation and HV cable designs.
- Experience reviewing and checking designs, technical calculations, engineering drawings and documentation produced by others.
- Strong knowledge of 33kV substations, protection & control, earthing and auxiliary systems.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, including SLDs, schematics, GA layouts and wiring diagrams.
- Good understanding of HV plant and equipment, including transformers, switchgear and CTs/VTs.
- Experience working with DNOs/IDNOs on design submissions and approvals.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Experience preparing or reviewing protection studies and earthing reports.
- Experience with SCADA, PV systems or energy conversion projects.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards Chartership.
- Familiarity with electrical design and network analysis software.
- Previous experience working within an ICP, utility contractor or IDNO environment.
