Job Description

The Buyer will be responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and purchasing materials and equipment required for construction projects across the UK.

This role requires strong knowledge of construction materials, market trends, and supplier management.

Responsibilities

  • Source and purchase construction materials, equipment, and services.
  • Ensure timely delivery of materials to meet project schedules.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and vendors.
  • Evaluate supplier performance and negotiate contracts to secure advantageous terms.
  • Monitor and control procurement costs to align with project budgets.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement strategies to reduce expenditure.
  • Maintain accurate records of purchases, pricing, and other relevant data.
  • Conduct supplier assessments and evaluations.
  • Resolve supplier-related issues to ensure seamless project progression.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to secure best pricing and delivery terms.
  • Coordinate with project managers and site supervisors for material requirements.
  • Ensure all purchased materials and services comply with industry standards and project specifications.
  • Conduct regular quality checks and audits of procured items.
  • Prepare and maintain procurement reports, records, and documentation.
  • Report on procurement activities, supplier performance, and cost savings to senior management.
  • Mentor Junior Buyers and Procurement Assistants.

Qualifications

  • Essential:
    • Proven procurement experience in Utilities or Construction.
    • Minimum 4 years’ experience.
    • Strong understanding of construction materials & equipment.
    • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency in procurement software and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
    • Ability to manage a varied workload and prioritise effectively within a fast-paced environment.
  • Desirable:
    • Professional certification (e.g., CIPS).
    • Energy Sector experience.
