The General Operative will play a key supporting role within the Carryduff treatment facility by maintaining high standards of site cleanliness, hygiene, and organisation across all operational and welfare areas. This role directly supports the IWS Operators by ensuring that processing zones, plant walkways, storage areas, and welfare facilities are consistently clean, safe, and free from hazards, helping to maintain operational flow and compliance. The postholder will contribute to the safe and efficient running of the site by carrying out routine housekeeping duties, spill response, basic waste handling, and general support tasks that enable Operators to focus on machinery operation, waste processing and throughput targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hygiene & Housekeeping
    • Maintain high standards of cleanliness across the treatment plant, yard, and welfare areas.
    • Ensure walkways, bunds, access routes, and workstations are kept clear of waste, debris, and hazards.
    • Carry out routine cleaning around plant and equipment (external cleaning only).
    • Respond promptly to spills, contamination, and hygiene issues.
    • Empty internal and external bins and ensure correct segregation of waste streams.
    • Support daily, weekly, and monthly site cleaning schedules.
  • Operational Support
    • Assist IWS Operators with basic manual tasks such as clearing waste materials, staging materials, and supporting operational readiness.
    • Support segregation of materials to prevent contamination and ensure compliance with site procedures.
    • Move materials, containers, and equipment around the site using safe manual handling techniques.
    • Clean around loading/unloading areas to support continuous movement of waste.
    • Assist with plant clean‑downs and shutdown cleaning activities.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance
    • Adhere to all Health & Safety, Environmental, and operational policies and procedures.
    • Wear all required PPE and ensure it is kept clean, fit for purpose and used correctly.
    • Report hazards, unsafe conditions, near misses, spills, and defects promptly.
    • Support ISO, waste permitting and compliance obligations by contributing to clean, safe site conditions.
    • Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and training sessions.
  • Site Support & Teamwork
    • Support colleagues and supervisors by assisting with general site duties as required.
    • Work collaboratively with IWS Operators to ensure smooth operational flow.
    • Assist in maintaining stock organisation, storage areas, and yard tidiness.
    • Support new starters by demonstrating correct cleaning and housekeeping standards.
  • Administrative Responsibilities
    • Complete cleaning records, spill response logs, and basic check sheets as required.
    • Communicate site issues promptly to the Yard Operations Manager.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Essential
    • Experience in a manual labour, industrial, yard, or housekeeping environment.
    • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, carrying, and repetitive movement.
    • Strong understanding of safe working practices.
    • Reliable, with excellent timekeeping and attendance.
    • Ability to follow instructions clearly and work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Attention to detail and pride in maintaining a clean working environment.
  • Desirable
    • Experience in industrial cleaning or hygiene‑focused roles.
    • CSR card or similar Health & Safety qualification.
    • Full driving licence.
    • Experience working in waste, recycling, construction or industrial settings.

Job Requirements

  • Monday to Friday Rate: £14.00 per hour plus OT
  • 45 hours per week 7.30am to 4.30pm Unpaid lunch break included
  • 30 days annual leave inclusive of 10 public holidays

Training and Development
