In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving a wide variety of machinery used in fridge recycling operations with a particular focus on the fridge degassing and foam treatment plant (“Jerry”). This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who thrives in a hands‑on, production‑driven environment and enjoys technical problem-solving in a fast‑moving industrial setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform reactive maintenance to ensure machinery operates at optimal performance levels.
  • Overhaul, adapt, and improve existing machinery to enhance reliability and performance.
  • Carry out mechanical maintenance with some electrical work as required.
  • Replace bearings, inspect compressors, and maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Maintain and repair equipment including conveyors, pipework, hydraulics, pneumatics, and welding tasks.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and propose new methods and procedures.
  • Complete all documentation, logs, and work records to a high standard.
  • Carry out basic facility and site service maintenance as required.
  • Work as part of a cohesive team, adopting a flexible, first-time-right approach.

  • Ensure full compliance with F‑Gas, DSEAR/ATEX, LOTO, PUWER, LOLER, and permit-to-work systems.
  • Manage environmental controls: vacuum integrity, condensers/chillers, emissions capture, foam dust suppression, and activated carbon media.
  • Support internal and external audits with accurate documentation and system knowledge.
  • Maintain vacuum pumps, refrigerant recovery units, compressors, condensers, fans, ducting, instrumentation, and gas detection systems.
  • Conduct electrical tasks including VSD/PLC fault-finding, safety circuit checks, I/O inspections, and interlock validation.
  • Diagnose and repair failures such as loss of vacuum, carbon bed breakthrough, gas detector alarms, mechanical binding, electrical trips, failed actuators, and chiller/condensation issues.
  • Monitor vacuum levels, flow/pressure temperatures, chiller performance, extraction rates, gas alarm status, and interlocks with fridge shredding stages.
  • Conduct emissions and ambient checks per SOP.
  • Lead performance reviews for Jerry (uptime, refrigerant capture efficiency, leak rate, carbon media life).
  • Implement improvements to reduce downtime and enhance plant safety and efficiency.

This is not an exhaustive list. You may also be required to carry out any other duties as required by the business that you are qualified/trained in that meet the requirements of this role.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • A minimum of 1 year mechanical experience, preferably in hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, and general plant machinery.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, production‑driven environment, ideally with experience in a recycling plant or similar industry.
  • A flexible, team‑oriented attitude with the ability to adapt to different tasks and shifts as required.
