The Lead Engineer will have responsibility for planning and coordinating the technical expertise and services required to ensure successful delivery of high quality engineering to meet commercial and technical needs. The Lead Engineer is expected to improve the work processes and be a technical governance for the discipline. The scope will include studies and tenders as well as live projects.
Key Tasks and Areas of Responsibility
- Provide specialist skills, integrity and knowledge in project or tender engineering, including design codes, legislative requirements and current good engineering practice.
- Understand the clients’ needs; identifies and addresses design parameters and problems; develops and implements solutions.
- Ensure feasibility, soundness and best adequation of proposed methodology for shallow water cable laying, trenching and other operations.
- Under limited supervision, independently evaluates, organizes and prioritises work.
- Undertake responsibility for review and production of deliverables, such as execution plans, design calculations, specifications, procedures, analyses, progress reports, Scopes of Work, bid evaluations, study reports and various 3rd-party documentations.
- Sign and issue technical documentation as originator or checker, accepting personal responsibility for its adequacy.
- Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed.
- Ensure proposed methodology is the safest possible.
- Organise HIRA reviews with all required stakeholders, making sure that highlighted actions are realised.
- Represent the Company in meetings/correspondence with clients, subcontractors, 3rd parties etc., in a technical capacity.
- Train / mentor more junior engineers.
- Support the Principal Engineer and Project Engineering Manager in performing and coordinating engineering for successful project delivery.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are available onsite for a safe execution of the work.
- Ensure feasibility of proposed methodology and ensures buy in from all parties including offshore personnel.

- Manage resources to witness directly or liaise with Inspectors to ensure that suitable contractual activities such as load test, trial fits, are being carried out in accordance with minimum requirements.
- Manage the preparation of any engineering analysis of tasks relating to installation, to ensure the structural/operational integrity of the equipment during installation.
- Sign and issue technical documentation as originator checker or approver, accepting personal responsibility for its adequacy.
- Ensure the selection of suitable equipment to perform operational tasks offshore, checking all aspects of the equipment to ensure it is operated safely and efficiently with suitable certification provided to meet statutory regulations.
- Also liaise with vessel departments and third party contractors to ensure all equipment is fit for purpose and fully compatible with offshore worksite.
- Manage the co-ordination/compilation of as-built material and commercial aspects of contractual variations from site/fabricators/offshore.
- Ensure full traceability of the technical development of the assigned scope throughout the life of the project.
- Ensure that specifications and scopes of work within the assigned project scope have been reviewed and agreed by the relevant centres of competence and that all quality issues are captured in the relevant quality control plan.
- Agree and monitor performance objectives with direct reports.
- Actively engage in knowledge sharing, capture lessons learned and application of engineering standards.
- Understand supply chain management processes and key commodity strategies.
- Actively engage in project risk assessment/ mitigation processes.
- Promote personal development and regular engagement with the professional engineering community.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
- Post Graduate Engineering degree or equivalent qualification.
- Strong focus on technical knowledge within discipline.
- Good knowledge of cable laying including shallow water installation experience.
Desirable Qualifications or Equivalent Experience
- Expert with proven ability over an extended breadth of execution.
- Acquainted in Legislations and Standards as relevant for the area of responsibility.
Demonstrable Experience Specific to Role
- Extensive experience as a Project Engineer.
