ROLE SUMMARY

As a Lead Platform Engineer, you will spearhead the design, development, and evolution of our core platform technologies, ensuring our engineering teams are empowered to deliver exceptional products. You will provide technical leadership and mentorship to platform engineers, champion best practices, and help set the strategic direction for our platform initiatives. Collaborating closely with cross - functional stakeholders, you will drive the adoption of modern engineering principles, foster a culture of innovation, and ensure the robustness, scalability, and s ecurity of our foundational platforms. This role demands a blend of hands - on technical expertise and leadership to shape a platform that is both reliable and forward - thinking.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

You will be engineering and maintaining fit - for - purpose environments and pipelines addressing the needs of our product development organisation as well as those of our customers. We treat our platform just like a product, it has a backlog, customers, requirement s and therefore your work will cover both long - term project work, and ongoing BAU support.
To achieve this, you will:
1. Define standards, build internal tooling, SDKs & frameworks , share processes and build documentation.
2. Lead the architecture and continuous improvement of our foundational AWS platform, pipelines, and developer portal with Backstage.
3. Mentor and guide platform engineers, fostering skill development through code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
4. Collaborate with engineering, security, and product teams to understand requirements, set priorities, and deliver platform capabilities that elevate developer experience and operational excellence.
5. Define and uphold best practices in platform engineering, including infrastructure as code, CI/CD automation, observability, and security standards.
6. Drive the vision and roadmap for platform engineering, championing new technologies, tools, and processes that enhance scalability, resilience, and efficiency.
7. Act as an ambassador for platform engineering both internally and externally, sharing insights through documentation, presentations, and technical forums.
8. Proactively identify, assess, and resolve technical challenges, ensuring the platform remains robust, secure, and cost - effective.
9. Promote a culture of collaboration, transparency, and customer - centricity within the team and across the engineering organisation.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:
• Automation at the heart of everything you do, scripting languages a must,
• Proven track record of operating , deploying and op timising c loud i nfrastructure (ideally AWS),
• Extensive p roduction experience with Infrastructure as Code ( Terrafrom / CDK ) ,
• Expertise in running Kubernetes, HELM, ArgoCD at enterprise scale ,
• Demonstratable e xperience working with containerised apps ( EKS, D ocker, ECS) ,
• Excellent knowledge of monitoring and observability best practices (We use DataDog , CloudWatch),
• Able to deliver code solutions that are clean, tested, performant, scalable, secure and follow SOLID principles.
SOFT SKILLS:
• Innovative and looking to challenge the status quo and drive continuous improvement,
• Ability to build strong relationships with wide range of internal/external stakeholders (technical and
non - technical), and to influence senior stakeholders to reach consensus to drive change,
• Demonstrating a high attention to detail and quality, whilst able to consider the bigger picture,
• Experience in fast - moving agile environments working across a large engineering team,
• Experience working with engineering teams that use C#
• Resilient and perseverant , demonstrating a positive can - do and customer - focused attitude,
• Understanding of cyber security, awareness of or experience with PCI and ISO27001 compliance
• Curious , staying up to date with industry developments, active in external communities ,
• Organised, dependable, able to juggle multiple tasks and priorities and work well under pressure ,
• Ability to work remotely with limited supervision, and to interact with remote and distributed teams,
• E xperience building internal frameworks for engineers
• E xperience formally/informally mentoring more junior engineers
