We are recruiting for an experienced Health & Safety Controller, ideally with experience in the manufacturing sector. This role is working for a very successful manufacturing company with around 140 employees, based in Southend on Sea, Essex. Salary £35k, annual bonus, free lunch daily.

Role Purpose

The Health & Safety Controller is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the company’s health, safety, and wellbeing systems across all manufacturing sites. The role ensures compliance with UK health and safety legislation, reduces operational risk, promotes a positive safety culture, and supports continuous improvement in workplace safety performance. The postholder will work closely with Coordinators, production teams, contractors, First Aiders and Fire Marshals to ensure safe working practices are embedded throughout the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure everything they do is in compliance with the health and safety at work act 1974.
  • Stay up to date with ACOPS and regulations when writing risk assessment and implementing new policies.
  • Create and develop health and safety policies and safe working procedures.
  • Implement and monitor health and safety policies.
  • Provide guidance and advice to co-ordinators as a health and safety professional.
  • Personal goal to achieve ISO 45001 health and safety certification.
  • Write and review risk assessments on all aspects of buildings, procedures, equipment, chemicals to comply with management of health and safety at work regulations 1999.
  • Ensure that the staff feel they are listened to when they raise a concern.
  • Be seen out on the shop floor and be approachable to all staff.
  • Keep a positive focus on health and safety within the company.
  • Respond quickly and efficiently to health and safety related complaints or issues.
  • Conduct regular proactive health and safety inspections to all sites.
  • Design and carry out safety tours of buildings to identify current or potential hazards.
  • Assess areas of high risk of injury to employees and prioritise where improvements are needed the most.
  • Ensure health and safety equipment (PPE) is provided and used.
  • Introduce PPE declarations to make sure PPE is used and cared for.
  • Assess competence and training requirements.
  • Organise refresher training following accidents.
  • Attain PAT testing certificate eliminating the need for outside contractors.
  • Organise training so staff are competent to complete their job safely.
  • Accident and incident investigation and reporting.
  • Follow up on incidents and accidents to identify root causes.
  • Annual review of all reported accidents to find trends where people are most likely to have an accident and eliminate the cause.
  • Manage emergency procedures.
  • Fire alarm testing to all buildings.
  • Appoint and train Fire Marshals.

Person Specification

Essential

  • NEBOSH General Certificate (minimum).
  • Proven health & safety experience within manufacturing, engineering, or industrial environments.
  • Strong understanding of UK H&S legislation.
  • Experience conducting audits, investigations, and risk assessments.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills.
  • Ability to work independently across multiple sites.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
  • ISO 45001 Internal or Lead Auditor qualification.
  • Membership of IOSH (TechIOSH / GradIOSH / CMIOSH).
  • Experience within multi-site operations.
  • Environmental or sustainability knowledge.
