A well-established and highly regarded criminal defence firm in the West Midlands is looking to appoint a Duty Criminal Defence Solicitor to join its growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a driven solicitor seeking hands-on criminal defence work, advocacy exposure, and long-term career development within a supportive and reputable practice.

The Role

You will handle a broad range of criminal defence matters, including police station attendance, magistrates’ court advocacy, and preparation of cases for the Crown Court. The role includes participation in the duty solicitor rota and offers exposure to a varied and consistently busy caseload.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advising and representing clients at the police station, including out-of-hours attendance
  • Managing a full criminal defence caseload from instruction through to conclusion
  • Conducting advocacy in the Magistrates’ Court, including trials and hearings
  • Preparing cases for the Crown Court and instructing counsel where appropriate
  • Providing clear, practical advice to both legally aided and private clients
  • Maintaining compliance with Legal Aid Agency requirements and professional standards

About You

  • Qualified Solicitor with experience in criminal defence work
  • Duty Solicitor accreditation (or working towards qualification)
  • Confident advocate with strong police station and court experience
  • Able to manage a busy caseload independently
  • Committed to delivering high-quality client care
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
