enki is working with an established early-stage venture capital firm looking to appoint its first dedicated senior finance hire on a fractional basis.
The fund is a specialist pre-seed investor, typically investing £250k–£500k per company, and has built a portfolio of approximately 50 investments to date.
Having already raised approximately £50m, the firm is now entering its next phase of growth and is currently working towards a further fundraise.
The existing finance function is in a good position. One of the GPs has historically taken ownership of finance, supported by an external bookkeeper, but with the portfolio growing and another raise underway, the team now wants to bring in an experienced Fractional FD/CFO to professionalise and take ownership of the function.
The Role
This will be a broad, hands-on finance leadership role working closely with the GP and wider investment team.
The initial focus will be taking ownership of the day-to-day finance function, strengthening reporting and controls, and creating greater structure around the financial operations of the management company and fund.
Alongside this, the FD/CFO will play an important role in supporting the firm's current fundraise and ensuring the finance function is ready for the next stage of growth.
Responsibilities are likely to include:
- Owning financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow management
- Managing and overseeing the existing bookkeeping support
- Producing clear management information for the GP and wider leadership team
- Improving financial processes, controls and reporting infrastructure
- Supporting fund-level accounting and reporting
- Working with external fund administrators, accountants, auditors and other advisers
- Supporting regulatory, compliance and investor reporting requirements where relevant
- Providing financial information and analysis to support the current fundraise
- Managing financial planning across the management company
- Reviewing the existing finance setup and identifying opportunities to improve or automate processes
- Acting as the senior finance point of contact for the firm as it continues to scale
The Profile
The firm is looking for an experienced FD or CFO who understands the requirements of running finance within an investment business.
Experience within venture capital, private equity, a family office, fund management or a similar investment environment would be particularly valuable.
The right person is likely to have:
- Strong experience leading a finance function at FD/CFO level
- Experience within a fund, investment manager or similarly regulated environment
- Understanding of fund accounting and management company accounting
- Experience working with external fund administrators and accountants
- Strong budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting skills
- Confidence working directly with GPs, founders or senior stakeholders
- Experience supporting fundraising or investor reporting would be highly advantageous
- A willingness to remain hands-on rather than operating purely at a strategic level
This is a small, entrepreneurial team, so cultural fit will be important. They are looking for someone pragmatic and commercially minded who can bring senior-level expertise without adding unnecessary complexity.
Commitment
The expectation is approximately 1–2 days per week, with flexibility depending on workload and the requirements of the current fundraise.
The firm is London-based, although the role can operate largely remotely with occasional time in London with the team.
