Overview: The main responsibilities of a Senior Carer are to involve people in decisions about their care and support, therefore enabling people to exercise their basic human rights. The information gathered will be reflected within the person's care plan, and the senior carer will be involved in implementing and reviewing care plans. This empowers people to have a 'voice' and enables individuals to experience high quality care and support that is right for the individual person.
Reports to: Home Manager. Responsible to: Operations Team.
Main Roles & Responsibilities:
- Show kindness, compassion and respect, as well as treating each person as unique.
- Promote the rights of people to have control over their lives and make informed choices about their care and support.
- Enable people to exercise their 'Human Rights' and make 'Choices' about their care, whilst maintaining their respect, privacy and dignity.
- Support people to make informed choices about potential and actual risks to themselves or others.
- Take the necessary steps to reduce the risks of people harming themselves and/or others.
- Promote diversity and respect all identities, values and culture.
- Form open, positive relationships and maintain professional boundaries with individuals, colleagues or relatives and respect their dignity, wellbeing and safety.
- Acknowledge an individual's Personhood, plus embedding a culture of person centredness.
- Recognise a person's spirituality.
- Respect the roles and expertise of colleagues from other professions, who may follow different professional codes, and work in partnership with them.
- Liaise with the relevant visiting/external professionals to support people to live as well as they can.
- Support people with their care needs, for example personal care; safe people moving techniques, monitoring and reporting any changes to physical and/or cognitive, mental and emotional presentation.
- Refer to Registered Nurse 'on call' procedure.
Accountability:
- Recognise and use responsibly the power and authority I have when working with people, this includes relatives and colleagues.
- Co-operate and work inclusively and openly with colleagues and others and treat them with respect.
- Be responsible for the work that I delegate to others.
- Refer to the 'Health and Social Care Standards'.
- Promote the SSSC Codes of Practice.
- All staff to adhere to Enhance 'Policies and Procedures'.
- Undertake the necessary 'safe Administration of Medications' training and competences, as well as maintaining regular updates.
- Implement and review people's care plan and risk assessments.
- Work in collaboration with the registered nurse and/or senior team regarding ongoing assessments and reviews.
- Maintain clear, accurate and up-to-date records in line with policies and procedures.
- Be truthful, open, honest and trustworthy.
- Be reliable and dependable.
Communication:
- Communicate in a respectful, open, accurate and straightforward way.
- Support people to communicate using their preferred method and language.
- Attend team meetings and share outcomes and ideas with those in attendance.
- Liaise with the relevant persons and discuss 'What is working well', as well as 'What we could do better'.
- Acknowledge 'Relationship centred care' - maintaining established relationships and routines developed prior to admission.
- Effective communication is essential to achieving success.
Collaboration & Teamwork:
- When supporting individuals, it is fundamental that we identify 'what and who' is important to the person.
- Liaise and involve friends and families where appropriate.
- Maintaining good 'Teamwork' is essential.
- Refer to good practice guidance and recommended tools to gain positive experiences for people.
- Co-operate with any investigations by my employer, the SSSC or a relevant authority into my fitness to practise or the fitness to practise of others.
Supervision & Appraisal:
- Prepare for and engage in supervision to reflect on my development, learning needs, wellbeing and practice.
- Participate in annual staff appraisals.
Learning & Development:
- Each staff member has a responsibility to maintain their own personal development.
- Update EVOLVE statutory and mandatory E-learning in line with Enhance protocol.
- Attend recommended training identified by the Home Manager.
- Undertake the relevant SVQ qualifications, competencies required for the position of senior carer.
Confidentiality:
- Respect confidential information and clearly explain policies about confidentiality to colleagues.
- All staff MUST respect confidentiality.
- Consent MUST be gained prior to taking photographs and/or videos of a person.
Recognising abuse:
- All staff to ensure that people living within Enhance Healthcare are protected from abuse and free from harm and neglect.
- Where abuse or harm is considered/observed, you have a responsibility to notify the person in charge immediately.
- Support people and colleagues to give and receive feedback, raise concerns and complaints.
Health and Safety:
- All staff are responsible for maintaining a safe environment.
- Follow practices, procedures and policies designed to keep me and other people safe at work.
Infection Prevention and Control:
- All staff are responsible for maintaining a clean environment.
- Ensure people's bedrooms and communal areas are clean and clutter free.
