Senior / Principal Highway Engineer Gloucester, Gloucestershire (Hybrid) Permanent or Contract Job Description Fancy shaping the roads, junctions and active travel routes that an entire county will use for the next generation?
We're working with a leading multi-disciplinary consultancy who are growing their Local Government team in Gloucester, and they're after two great engineers to join them: a Senior Highway Engineer and a Principal (or Associate) Highway Engineer .
Same team, same exciting pipeline of work, just a different level of experience and leadership on offer, so whichever stage of your career you're at, there's a seat at the table.
This isn't a "keep the lights on" role.
There's a genuinely ambitious, multi-year programme of highways, bridges and infrastructure projects lined up across the county, so you'll be getting your teeth into meaty, varied work rather than ticking over on small jobs.
And if you're not looking for a permanent move right now, good news: this can be offered on a contract basis too, for anyone who prefers that route.
Key Responsibilities Both roles will get stuck into: Developing highway designs on multi-disciplinary projects, from concept through to delivery.
Keeping projects on programme, on budget, and squarely within technical standards and legal requirements.
Supporting Project Managers with planning, technical input, pricing of project briefs, proposals and cost estimation.
Preparing, checking and reviewing design documentation, drawings, reports and technical submissions.
Juggling a varied portfolio of multi-disciplinary projects at any one time (in the good way).
Coordinating engineering and technician resources to get work packages delivered.
Working closely with clients, stakeholders and internal teams to keep everyone rowing in the same direction.
Getting out on site now and then to support supervision and check contractor compliance.
As Senior Highway Engineer, you'll also: Be a go-to for junior engineers and technicians, helping them grow their skills and confidence.
As Principal Highway Engineer, you'll additionally: Take the lead technically and manage the Senior Highway Engineer and wider design team.
Help build the Gloucester Highway Engineering team pretty much from the ground up, shaping its direction, hiring great people and setting the culture from day one.
Check, certify and authorise designs, documents, approvals and reports for issue.
Mentor more junior staff across the team and help them progress their careers.
What We're Looking For A genuine interest in design and a knack for finding smart, practical engineering solutions.
A degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent experience gained within a highway design environment.
Chartered status preferred, or working towards IEng/CEng with a relevant professional institution (Principal applicants: Chartered status is a strong plus).
Solid multi-disciplinary highway design experience and/or highway drainage know-how.
Principal candidates should bring broader, deeper experience across areas like road geometry, roundabouts, junctions, active travel, drainage, road restraint systems and traffic sign/road marking design.
Comfort with relevant design standards, including DMRB, Manual for Streets, TSRGD and Local Authority guidance, plus experience preparing drawings for Technical Approvals and Departures from Standard.
Confident use of design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley Open Roads Designer, Info Drainage and/or PDS.
An understanding of Designers' Duties under CDM regulations.
Principal applicants: some experience mentoring, managing or developing engineering staff would go a long way.
