England Netball (EN) is the national governing body for the only team sport in England that has been created for women, by women. It oversees and is responsible for the strategic plan of the sport across the country. EN is a not-for-profit, organisation aiming to:
‘lead a movement on and beyond the court. To uphold an unapologetic focus on women and girls whilst opening the game for new audiences to belong, flourish and soar’.
Netball has experienced a decade of extraordinary growth including the Vitality Roses 2018 Commonwealth Games Gold medal and the history making Netball World Cup 2023 Silver Medal. Both have contributed to a thriving legacy of increased following and participation in the sport. Following the successes on the international stage, fans flocked to sold out arenas registering record-breaking attendances, and a diverse portfolio of participation programmes (including Bee Netball, Back to Netball, Walking Netball and Club Netball) scaled up significantly to support 3.1m participants to enjoy the sport annually.
Having launched our 10-Year ‘Adventure Strategy’ in 2021, EN has now entered its 'transformation' stage. This means increased visibility via accelerating our professionalisation aspirations and taking the sport to new audiences.
Overview
Netball provides acceptance, community and enjoyment and is sport that we know people, particularly women and girls, access throughout the various stages of life. Our in-house safeguarding course is designed to equip volunteers and coaches with the knowledge and skills to create a safe environment for players and to deal with concerns if they arise.
What is the mandatory Safeguarding Training?
The course is a mix of self-led online material and tutor-led facilitated workshops. The course contains realistic netball-related scenarios to aid discussion and learning that can be applied in a netball setting. It is a combined course covering adult and child safeguarding issues, knowledge and practice.
The role
Safeguarding Tutors play a key role in maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment in netball by delivering our in house safeguarding training. Specifically, developing and supporting coaches and volunteers to obtain the skills and knowledge required to recognise unsafe situations, abuse and poor practice, and to respond accordingly. This could occur in netball, players' families or communities and could be observed by or disclosed to participants. Tutors are also crucial to help volunteers and coaches understand their role in creating supportive environments in their own netball setting.
