Your mission at Engitix Therapeutics is to unlock extracellular matrix biology to develop transformative therapeutics in fibrosis and oncology. We are seeking an accomplished Senior Scientist in extracellular matrix (ECM) biology and 3D models to take a leading role in understanding disease-associated ECM remodelling, developing translational tissue- and ECM-derived disease models, and identifying and validating novel therapeutic targets in fibrosis and cancer.

The role requires a scientist with deep expertise in ECM biology and disease-relevant experimental models. The successful candidate will investigate the mechanisms responsible for ECM remodelling in fibrosis and cancer, including ECM deposition and assembly, post-translational modification, and degradation, translating these insights into target discovery and validation strategies.

A major focus of the role will be the development and application of tissue-derived and ECM-based models of fibrosis and cancer, including precision-cut tissue slices, primary tissue-derived ECM systems, decellularised matrices, and complex 3D cellular models, for target validation, mechanistic studies, and therapeutic testing.

The successful candidate will work across internal programmes and partnership workstreams, applying tissue-based models alongside cellular, biochemical, molecular biology, imaging, and proteomic approaches to understand ECM biology, validate therapeutic targets, and evaluate novel therapeutic agents.

What you'll do:

  • Drive experimental studies investigating ECM remodelling mechanisms in fibrosis and cancer, including matrix deposition, post-translational modification, proteolytic degradation, and generation of biologically active ECM products.
  • Develop, optimise, and implement translational tissue-derived models of fibrosis and cancer, including precision-cut tissue slices and other ex vivo primary human tissue systems, for mechanistic studies, target validation, and therapeutic testing.
  • Develop and optimise ECM-derived and ECM-based 3D disease models, including decellularised tissue matrices, tissue-derived ECM preparations, and relevant primary-cell co-cultures.
  • Establish robust and reproducible functional readouts capturing disease-relevant ECM remodelling, stromal-cell phenotypes, and therapeutic responses for target discovery workflows.
  • Support proteomic and peptidomic approaches using primary tissues, ECM preparations, and disease models to characterise ECM remodelling and enable target discovery and validation.
  • Collaborate with computational and data-science teams to integrate experimental findings with large-scale omics and screening datasets, identify mechanistic and therapeutic hypotheses, and refine functional screening strategies.
  • Analyse and critically interpret experimental data, maintain high-quality records, and communicate findings through reports and presentations.

Your profile:

  • Deep expertise in extracellular matrix biology, with a strong mechanistic understanding of ECM remodelling mechanisms in disease.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience developing and applying complex tissue-derived and/or 3D experimental models, ideally including precision-cut tissue slices, primary human tissue models, decellularised matrices/scaffolds, hydrogel-based systems, or complex co-culture platforms.
  • Experience developing robust functional and phenotypic readouts for target validation, mechanistic studies, and/or therapeutic testing.
  • Experience working with primary stromal-cell populations, including fibroblasts and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), in disease-relevant contexts.
  • Expertise in relevant imaging and tissue-analysis techniques, including immunofluorescence and quantitative analysis of tissue sections.
  • Hands-on experience with relevant biochemical and molecular biology techniques, which may include MSD or related immunoassays, RNA/DNA extraction, qRT-PCR, western blotting, and gene knockdown approaches.
  • Hands-on experience in or familiarity with proteomics and/or peptidomics, particularly where applied to ECM biology, tissue samples, or disease mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with analysis or interpretation of large-scale omics or functional screening datasets.
  • Experience in fibrosis, oncology, and/or translational drug discovery, particularly in an industry or industry-collaborative environment, would be advantageous.
  • PhD in Biomedical sciences, Tissue Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related discipline, plus 3 years’ experience in academia or industry, or equivalent.
  • Ability to plan, execute, and critically assess experiments independently.
  • Strong scientific judgement, including the ability to identify appropriate controls, recognise experimental limitations, and troubleshoot technically challenging assays and models.

Why us?

  • Be part of a pioneering biotech transforming drug discovery through ECM biology.
  • Work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment with opportunities to shape the future of targeted therapeutics.
  • We offer a competitive package including private medical insurance, pension, bonus, employee perks, and more!
