Great Britain is at a critical point on its path to net zero and decarbonisation of the energy system. The Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) is an important capability for NESO, helping navigate the complexities of the energy transition towards Net Zero by combining expert economic analytical capability with a whole systems view of the UK's energy landscape.

As an Economic Analyst, you will support economic analysis across various areas of NESO, considering economic welfare aspects, macroeconomic factors, economic trends, regulatory and market economics, and consumer behaviour influences. You will also analyse and forecast economic costs within the evolving energy landscape.

This role is based in Warwick or Wokingham on a full-time basis, with hybrid working from office and home, requiring at least 1 day per week in the office.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Contribute to projects within the Office of the Chief Economist, providing economic analysis and modelling on topics related to the energy sector.
  • Investigate the economic drivers and outcomes of decarbonisation.
  • Conduct literature reviews, data gathering, and analysis, contributing to the development of economic methodologies.
  • Lead analysis work as appropriate, collaborating with stakeholders across NESO.
  • Attend conferences and research events to stay updated on industry insights.
  • Conduct economic analysis across different sectors in the energy industry.
  • Apply whole system thinking while drawing conclusions from economic analyses.
  • Assist in preparing briefing notes and submissions for ministers or economic reports for executives.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of an internal knowledge-sharing platform.

About You:

  • Curious and forward-thinking with an interest in the broader energy landscape.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to conduct desktop research and analyse data.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Structured problem solver with a focus on data-related challenges.
  • Computer literate, particularly in MS Excel; experience in programming languages is advantageous.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of macroeconomics, microeconomics, applied economics, market economics, regulatory economics, econometrics, and/or behavioural economics.
  • An awareness of the GB whole energy system and key stakeholders.

Experience:

  • Experience in drawing economic insights from data and conducting economic forecasting.
  • Experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in conducting economic analysis within the energy sector is advantageous.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Economics or closely related discipline.
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel.
  • Broad understanding of the GB energy sector.
  • Experience of carrying out research or analysis in a workplace environment.

A competitive salary of £45,000 - £55,000 dependent on experience and capability, along with core benefits including a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave, and a contributory pension scheme.
