The senior journalist for production on the Digital News planning team is a pivotal new role responsible for overseeing and co-ordinating commissions by the team, ensuring stories are produced to the highest standard.
Main Responsibilities
- Working with other editors on the planning team, and those in story teams, the production SJ will be responsible for delivering first-class production on stories, focusing on sharp headlines; search optimisation; powerful promo images; push text; graphics and data; onward journeys and other story furniture.
- You will oversee all these elements as well as completing final checks and story sign-off.
- You will be a strong communicator, co-ordinating with the likes of picture and video teams, Visual Journalism, the Data Team and Design, and able to juggle multiple pieces of work at once, without compromising standards.
- You will have keen understanding of digital audiences, experience of SEO and demonstrable knowledge of how to apply audience data to grow our opportunity audiences.
- You will work five-day weeks, Monday to Friday, typically midday-20:00, with the occasional weekend.
- Finally, you will also support the planning assistant editors in the smooth running of the planning operation, and in generating and executing plans around big news events.

The successful candidate must have:
- Excellent editorial judgement with significant experience, overseeing all stages of the digital editing and production process to publication, in text, in English.
- Skilled at crafting clear, compelling, clickable headlines, and identifying the strongest visuals for selling a story.
- Demonstrable experience and understanding of SEO best practice, and using data to shape decisions and reach new audiences.
- A strong understanding of audience needs and how digital consumption is evolving on different platforms.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a range of key stakeholders including News Content teams, Picture Desk, Design, and Visual Journalism, to ensure stories are delivered to brief and to deadline.
- Excellent organisational skills and experience of co-ordinating multiple stories and projects at the same time.
