About the role
Join Network Rail’s Business Systems team and help shape the future of reporting, analytics, cloud services and AI-enabled solutions that support critical business operations across the railway.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer to take ownership of our My Roster reporting estate, contribute to the evolution of our Data as a Service (Daa S) platform and support the development of modern Azure-hosted solutions.
Working alongside technical specialists, business stakeholders and development teams, you'll play a key role in delivering innovative, scalable and customer-focused data services.
- What You’ll Be Doing
- Provide technical leadership for the My Roster reporting estate, developing and maintaining SQL Server databases, stored procedures, reporting solutions and supporting data structures.
- Support the development and delivery of the Data as a Service (Daa S) roadmap, ensuring solutions remain secure, scalable and aligned with governance and architectural standards.
- Manage and maintain Azure-hosted environments, coordinating upgrades, security improvements and platform enhancements.
- Work closely with Digital, Data & Technology (DDa T), Dev Ops, Asset Management and business stakeholders to deliver technical change and continuous service improvements.
- Mentor and support developers across the team, promoting engineering best practice and helping to develop technical capability.
- Support the Business Systems web and data estate, providing technical expertise and assisting with complex issue resolution.
- Identify opportunities to improve customer outcomes through automation, analytics, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
- Champion high standards of software engineering, automation, documentation and continuous improvement.

- Experience working with Microsoft Azure and cloud-hosted environments.
- Experience developing business-critical software solutions and data integrations.

- Meet the essential criteria
- Degree qualification in Computer Science, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Significant experience of rofessional, experience building mobile and/or responsive web applications in an Agile development environment.
- Extensive experience working with web technologies of HTML, Java Script (ES6) and CSS.
- Experience with responsive app development.
- Strong understanding & experience of using front-end and back-end Java Script frameworks and libraries, specifically Node JS, Express. js, j Query and Bootstrap.
- Experience in developing and building back-end applications with RESTful API services and with web service protocols like SOAP, REST, and JSON.
- Experience with No SQL and relational databases, e. g. Mongo DB, SQL Server, My SQL including database design and use of database tools such as Mongoose for Mongo DB.
- Experience in cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, written and verbal communication skills, having the ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Knowledge of build and deployment tools - Grunt, Webpack, NPM, Git, Jenkins.
Desirable
- Experience with PHP development frameworks (Laravel etc).
- Experience with various design patterns (MVC, MVVM) and React implementations (Flux, Redux).
- Experience with CI/CD automation using Jenkins or other similar open-source tools.
- Experience with the Backbone. js Java Script library.
- Working knowledge of core AWS services (AWS Console, CLI, S3, SES, Cloud Watch etc).
- Experience in unit testing frameworks (Jest/Enzyme, Chai/Mocha etc) and test automation techniques.
- Familiarity with CSS pre-processors, such as SCSS.
- Knowledge of low-code platforms.
- Formal testing qualification / certifications in foundation level software testing (e. g. ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level).
- Appreciation of/experience in the rail industry or equivalent.
