About the role:

A typical day could involve working with safety, health and environmental data from a variety of sources, reviewing and validating information to identify gaps, inconsistencies and data quality issues. You will analyse trends, patterns and anomalies, transforming data into meaningful insights that help colleagues make informed decisions. You may be responsible for developing, maintaining and quality-assuring Power BI reports and supporting datasets, as well as managing dataflows, semantic models and reporting pipelines. The role also includes responding to ad-hoc stakeholder, regulatory and Freedom of Information requests, and working closely with colleagues across the business to improve how data is captured, managed, shared and used. Alongside analytical work, you will support continuous improvement activities, helping to strengthen data quality, streamline reporting processes and enhance the value of safety, health & environment data across the organisation.

A little bit about the team:

You'll be joining the Health & Safety Systems & Analysis team, which sits within the wider Technical Authority function. The immediate team consists of five colleagues and is led by the Safety, Health & Environment Analysis Manager. The team provides independent safety, health and environment analysis, insight and reporting that supports evidence-based decision-making across Network Rail. We are responsible for managing national safety, health and environment datasets, delivering periodic performance reporting, responding to ad-hoc and regulatory information requests, and providing technical assurance on data quality and reporting practices. The team develops and maintains data pipelines and Power BI reporting solutions, transforming complex information into trusted intelligence that enables the business to identify risks, monitor performance, drive improvement and meet regulatory obligations.

Your experience and skills:

We are looking for a technically capable and intellectually curious analyst who thrives on turning complex data into actionable insight. You will be highly organised, adaptable and able to balance multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail. The successful candidate will have experience working with complex datasets and analytical tools, delivering impactful analysis, dashboards and reporting that have influenced strategic or operational decision-making. You will be confident challenging assumptions, validating information, identifying trends and anomalies, and communicating findings in a clear and compelling way to a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leaders. You will be comfortable working with modern reporting and business intelligence tools, using data to solve problems, support evidence-based decisions and drive continuous improvement. Experience in Health and Safety, risk, operational performance or regulated industries would be beneficial; however, we welcome candidates from a broad range of analytical backgrounds. Above all, you will have a passion for data, a commitment to objectivity and integrity, and the ability to provide trusted insight that enables informed decision-making and organisational improvement.

Essential Criteria:

• Degree in a relevant subject such as statistics or business, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Proven experience in analytical techniques and data models.
• Proven experience in analytical systems, including Power BI.
• Previous experience of working within a reporting environment.
• Excellent analytical skills.
• Organised and strong time-management skills.
• Technical understanding of data reporting issues.
• Proven ability to accurately and concisely summarise, present and communicate information effectively and appropriately for the relative audience, both written and verbal.
• Confident influencing and challenging stakeholders of all levels.
