Job Purpose: BBC London’s online team writes stories which are read by millions every day and we are looking for a journalist to join the team based at New Broadcasting House. The growth in the number of digital services provided by the team is a direct result of new technologies which are changing the way that people can receive news content. The role of the team is to respond to these changes and make BBC News content available to people wherever and whenever they want it. You’ll be working in a lively and friendly newsroom alongside TV and radio journalists and digital video specialists.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities: This role involves using your skills to write sharp, accurate and engaging stories and also to have a keen awareness of still images, video and audio for use on one of the world’s most heavily-used news websites. This will include covering stories for news-led local and national indexes online as well as developing original stories and features. You will also develop index management and newsdesk skills as part of a team which co-ordinates online news coverage across the capital city. This role offers an opportunity to work with colleagues across London and the wider BBC News to provide the strongest news-led online output for local, national and international audiences.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience: You will have experience in daily news journalism writing stories and features for online with the proven ability to translate stories into lively multimedia material. We are looking for candidates that can demonstrate that they can find and create engaging content and who can use social media as a news resource and promotional tool. They should also have a good understanding of our audiences to ensure we accurately reflect all under-represented communities. Additionally, a good working knowledge of using the BBC’s content management system Optimo is desirable and a solid working knowledge of media law is essential.

About the BBC: The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk. We don’t focus simply on what we do - we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours here.

Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual’s unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential. We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC - whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity. We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
