On The Day is at the centre of the BBC news operation, handling breaking and developing news, around the UK and the World with a commitment to serving all audiences wherever they are accessing BBC News. As our audiences' changes and their news habits develop, we are remodelling our 24/7 news desk to meet those demands. The news desk brings together production, reporting and technical expertise to be industry leader in live and breaking news.
The News Stills Team works on the news desk at the heart of On The Day, in Broadcasting House. They coordinate and monitor incoming photos from BBC staff on location, news agencies and organisations allied to the BBC. The team also deals with requests for images from teams across BBC News and react quickly to breaking news and the daily editorial agenda. News Stills also logs the use of images and ensures copyright restrictions are adhered to.
Main Responsibilities
- Monitor and coordinate incoming files from BBC staff on location, news agencies or organisations allied to the BBC.
- Alert news teams to the best of this material and monitor what they use.
- Share the best BBC material with our news teams and partners.
- Handle a variety of ad hoc requests relating to the research of photographs and negotiate the clearance of stills and provide copyright advice and information.
- Carry out technical and editorial assessments of incoming material.
- Identify the best material and alert programmes proactively to the editorial significance of pictures, still images and accompanying copy.
- Capture and enter accurate metadata relating to stills and video material, including copyright information and possible restrictions on usage or re-use.
- Provide material to the nations and regions, agencies and BBC external clients or partners.
- Respond to queries and requests for material, information and guidance from teams across BBC News.
Are you the right candidate?
Essential:
- Experience working on the picture or image desk in newsrooms or media organisations.
- A qualification in archives, records or information management or equivalent experience.
- Awareness of Copyright and how it relates to Stills.
- News judgement and the ability to spot a story.
- Knowledge of BBC output across all platforms.
- A willingness to work under pressure, flexibly and to tight deadlines.
- Experience or awareness of content management systems for stills and/or video.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Communication and negotiation skills, and the ability to successfully manage relationships within a newsroom environment.
