Job Introduction

We are very pleased to be recruiting for a Head of Audience Research in the Strategy Audiences team of the BBC Audiences department. This role is a permanent, full-time role based in London.

Within the BBC, the Audiences department is central to providing high quality insight, performance data and inspiration to help decision making at all levels.

As part of Strategy Audiences, the successful applicant will play a key role in leading audience research shaping the future of the BBC.

This specific role offers an excellent opportunity for anyone who enjoys finding solutions to address complex audience research questions, and has a very strong background in qualitative and quantitative research methods. Deep expertise in working with and analysing audience measurement data from industry sources is also highly desirable.

As part of the team, you will be responsible for leading insight projects to inform the long-term strategy of the BBC, involving:

  • Finding the solution to answer complex research questions. The questions we need to answer are stretching and very varied – they can be future-focused, and the concepts we explore can be very new and complicated, both to us and to audiences. Finding the appropriate research or analysis approach(es) to address the question is a key part of this role, as is the ability to convey complicated ideas clearly and succinctly to audiences.
  • Delivering qualitative and quantitative research to a publication standard across all stages of the process (the research design, sampling, research materials, resulting debriefs and reports). This will involve commissioning and managing our partner research agencies to undertake the research. It will also include undertaking the research itself (for example, project design, sample frameworks, discussion guide development, questionnaire design, analysis, debrief/report writing).
  • Analysing and reporting audience measurement data (e.g. from BARB, RAJAR, Ipsos iris, Compass), including deep interrogation of the data (often in conjunction with data scientists).
  • Working with colleagues from across the Audiences team, Data Science, Strategy and Performance, Policy, Corporate Affairs and the Director-General’s Office. The role reports to the Portfolio Head of Audiences for Strategy and Performance. The role will involve line management responsibilities.
  • An ability to be flexible in adapting to evolving requirements and deadlines.

Are you the right candidate?

You will want to lead on some of the biggest audience questions affecting the BBC today. The role requires a very high level of expertise so we are looking for a highly experienced audience/market/public policy researcher who has:

  • An extensive track record in designing audience or public policy research projects to answer stretching research questions, and leading these to tight deadlines in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Demonstrable deep expertise of audience/market/consumer research techniques, and qualitative and quantitative techniques.
  • Demonstrable strong knowledge and skills in data analysis (including evaluating and selecting relevant audience data, key trends and issues), and working with audience measurement systems and data sources to answer complex questions.
  • A high level of experience in communicating audience insights and complex audience data to senior stakeholders and the public domain – including in writing and through PowerPoint.
  • Exceptional attention to detail as accuracy is vital within this post, as are strong written and numerical skills.

We look forward to welcoming you and working with you as part of the team.
