Job Introduction

This Business Partner will provide strategic business management and programme oversight for the News HR function. The role requires a proactive and solution-focused approach to ensure the effective coordination of key initiatives, stakeholder engagement, and budgetary control, supporting the delivery of the News transformation agenda. The successful candidate will act as a key strategist, advisor, and coordinator, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations and the successful execution of critical HR programmes.

Main Responsibilities

Programme & Project Management

  • Govern and oversee a portfolio of projects within the News HR function, ensuring strategic alignment and effective prioritisation.
  • Establish robust reporting mechanisms to track progress against objectives, ensuring senior stakeholders are informed and engaged.
  • Maintain a high-level view of activity schedules, avoiding over-involvement in operational details while ensuring delivery.
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings, ensuring actions and decisions are documented and progress is tracked effectively.

Business Management & Strategic Advisory

  • Monitor the evolving business agenda, ensuring the HR Director is fully briefed on upcoming priorities and potential challenges.
  • Take an active role in managing HR Directors business commitments, ensuring seamless coordination of workstreams and strategic initiatives.
  • Ensure proactive engagement, identifying opportunities to streamline operations.

Budget Oversight & Financial Management

  • Oversee a budget, ensuring it is effectively allocated and utilised to maximise impact.
  • Partner with HR leadership to ensure budget alignment with the people strategy and broader News transformation goals.
  • Track spending, ensuring delivery within cost margins to strengthen the case for future funding opportunities.

Stakeholder & Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the News HR team, Centres of Expertise, supporting functions, and central HR services.
  • Source information quickly and efficiently by leveraging networks, ensuring timely responses to senior-level requests.
  • Work effectively with senior stakeholders, demonstrating confidence and diplomacy when engaging with executives.

Facilitation & Communication

  • Design, coordinate, and facilitate workshops, strategy sessions, and key meetings, ensuring clear objectives and structured outcomes.
  • Create and deliver presentations, ensuring key messages are conveyed through visually engaging and professional decks.
  • Develop high-quality business papers and executive-level reports, adapting communication styles to match senior leadership preferences.
  • Draft responses on behalf of the HR Director where required, ensuring alignment with their communication style and messaging.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
Essential:

  • Demonstrable experience in programme management and the governance of multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong business management experience, ideally in a strategic advisory role within a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Prior experience in working in HR prior and an understanding of the HR environment.
  • Proven experience in budget management and financial oversight, ensuring cost-effective delivery of programmes.
  • High-level stakeholder management skills, with a track record of working with senior executives and cross-functional teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint, with the ability to create high-quality, visually engaging decks.
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in written business papers, reports, and executive-level correspondence.
  • Experience in facilitating and delivering workshops, with the ability to confidently lead discussions and presentations.
  • Ability to work in ambiguous, fast-moving environments, adapting to change and staying calm under pressure.
  • Resilience and adaptability, with a proactive and hands-on approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to prioritise effectively, knowing when to delegate, escalate, or personally intervene.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in media or a similar high-paced, reactive industry.
  • Project management qualifications (e.g., PRINCE2, Agile, or equivalent).
