We are seeking a Primary Design Engineer with experience in Transmission and Distribution (T&D) projects to join our growing team. The base location will be at our office in Teesside and is expected to involve occasional travel supporting customers in Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Manufacturing and Energy sectors. In this role, you will be responsible for the design and development of high-voltage substations and transmission systems, ensuring safe, cost-effective, and technically sound solutions for our clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed primary (physical) designs for substations and transmission systems (typically 11kV to 400kV)
- Create and review layout drawings, general arrangements, and equipment plans, including transformers, circuit breakers, isolators, and busbars
- Perform technical calculations related to clearances, grounding, and equipment sizing
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and secondary (protection & control) teams to ensure integrated design
- Support in the preparation of technical specifications, bill of materials, and construction packages
- Participate in client meetings, site visits, and provide technical support during construction and commissioning
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements
- Assist in the tendering process and provide engineering input for proposals
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
- 3–7 years of experience in primary electrical design within the T&D industry
- Strong understanding of high-voltage equipment, substation layouts, and power system components
- Familiarity with CAD tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar)
- Knowledge of industry standards (IEC, IEEE, BS, etc.)
- Ability to manage time effectively across multiple projects
- Teamwork and Collaboration: Works confidently autonomously and as part of a team, using own initiative whilst keeping colleagues and clients informed.
- Self-Management: Prioritises, works smart and demonstrates a high level of accountability and a willingness to learn.
- Effective Communication: Makes a highly effective and collaborative contribution to the team by sharing knowledge, learning and information.

- Creativity and Curiosity: Open to challenge, using creativity to think beyond boundaries.
- A passion for engineering: Any engineering-related activities carried out during or out of formal education would be advantageous.
Training & Development
One-to-one training will be provided by an experienced Chartered Electrical Engineer to support your professional development. EPS will also deliver structured training in ETAP, DIgSILENT, and PSCAD power system modelling software, equipping you with the skills to perform complex engineering calculations and simulations. Where required, Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) may also be provided to prepare you for offshore project work.
