About the opportunity
Our client is a long-established North West civil engineering and highways contractor, delivering complex junction improvements, drainage schemes, active travel routes and public realm works across the region. The business works predominantly on long-term frameworks with local authorities and also delivers S278/S38 schemes for housebuilders and Tier 1 contractors, focusing on technically challenging projects rather than volume works.
They are now looking to appoint a Civils Quantity Surveyor with strong highways and S278/S38 experience to join their commercial team in Farnworth and take ownership of a portfolio of live schemes across the North West.
The role
You’ll be a key member of the commercial function, typically looking after 4–6 live projects at any one time across local authority frameworks and S278/S38 developer interfaces. Day to day, you will:
- Administer NEC3/NEC4 contracts, including Early Warnings and Compensation Events
- Manage the full monthly commercial cycle – measures, valuations, CVRs and forecast/EAC reporting
- Prepare, submit and agree interim and final accounts with clients and subcontractors
- Price variations and quantify changes from drawings, instructions and revised designs
- Lead commercial input on highways, drainage, junction upgrades and associated civils works
- Manage subcontract procurement, comparisons, orders and payment assessments
- Maintain accurate, audit-ready records to support change and commercial recovery
- Work closely with project management, site teams and the client to keep schemes on programme and within budget
What you’ll bring
- Experience as a Quantity Surveyor / Senior Quantity Surveyor within civil engineering, ideally highways-focused
- Strong exposure to NEC contracts including change control (EWs, CEs)
- Background in highways, S278/S38 adoption works, drainage and local authority frameworks
- Track record of managing multiple live jobs and delivering successful commercial outcomes
- Confident in the full monthly reporting cycle: valuations, CVRs, cash flow and forecasting
- Strong Excel skills; familiarity with digital take-off tools (e.g. Bluebeam/CostX/Causeway) is beneficial
- Full UK driving licence and the ability to commute to Farnworth (BL4) and travel across the region
What’s on offer
- Competitive salary in the region of £50,000 – £60,000 (DOE) + car/allowance + bonus
- Long-term security through multi-year North West highways frameworks
- A varied portfolio of local projects rather than nationwide travel
- Opportunity to genuinely own your schemes end-to-end, not just a small work package
- Clear progression path towards Senior/Lead QS or Commercial Manager
- Support for ongoing professional development and NEC-focused CPD
- A stable, close-knit team culture within a well-respected regional contractor with a strong track record in quality, safety and social value.
