Join us at ENGIE/First Hydro Company as we embark on one of the UK's most ambitious infrastructure projects - the £600m+ refurbishment of the iconic Dinorwig Power Station.
We're looking for a dynamic and experienced Deputy Project Director to play a pivotal role in delivering this multi-disciplinary, multi-functional programme. You'll be part of a high-performing team driving the station's life extension, ensuring technical excellence, contractual integrity, and seamless integration across all workstreams
What you'll be doing:
- Supporting the Project Director in leading the delivery of the Dinorwig Refurbishment Project.
- Managing key workstreams and packages, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
- Coordinating internal and external resources, including ENGIE, First Hydro, consultants, and contractors.
- Overseeing technical and contractual interfaces to ensure successful project execution.
- Championing collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement across the project lifecycle
Key accountabilities
- Leading and managing key elements of this major project through its contract negotiation, preparation & execution phases and handover to O&M phases.
- Deputising for the Project Director - as required.
- Develop and monitoring KPI's and milestones to ensure compliance with the approved scope, budget & program.
- Ensuring alignment and collaboration across technical and non-technical professionals is maintained to progress and coordinate contract placement and delivery management of the refurbishment project.
- Maintaining the team's commitment to achieve the project goals and managing conflicting priorities on a day to day basis.
- Leading, promoting and developing the safety culture at project level. Accountable for H&S strategy and management of the project including cooperation and coordination with other work groups to meet regulatory and Company requirements.
- Maintaining and promoting the team's focus on quality through all stages of delivery.
- Developing / applying the contractual strategy (based on solution driven approach with contractors and suppliers).
- Making decisions in negotiations and through ongoing contract management at project level in compliance with the mandate based on a clear understanding of the technical and commercial implications.
- Ensuring the proper identification, definition and follow-up of project risks and management of associated actions.
- Ensuring the proper identification, definition and follow-up of project opportunities.
- Manage the build-up of Project structure through recruitment/transfer of comptent resource.
- Supporting general communication with the remainder of the business and formal reporting to the Steering Group.
- Ensuring that approval requests, decisions and feedback from the Steering Group are documented and delivered.
- Ensuring cooperation and coordination with the overall FHC O&M organisation in support of the business' overall interests and priorities.
Knowledge & Skills
- Extensive knowledge of power generation or similar engineering industry and the application of quality, health & safety requirements for plant refurbishment work in that setting.
- Proven effective leadership skills and the ability to adapt to working in different environments and complex organisations (matrix management).
- Proven strong influencer and negotiator.
- Results oriented; capable of proposing and implementing effective solutions while considering all risks & opportunities
- Proven track record in contract development and negotiation with high level of commercial accumen.
- Proven track record of maintaining successful long-term relationships with supply chain partners on major projects.
- Proven delegation skills and able to create a positive working environment where people are empowered to act and motivated to perform.
- Able to manage conflicting, demanding and complex priorities with excellent organisational skills.
- Excellent communication skills, capability to communicate clearly and concisely (orally and written).
- Ability to lead and manage project delivery with a structured and defined approach facilitating effective governance.
- Able to effectively identify and manage strategic project risk.
- When needed, able to support the team by exploring and understanding detailed complex technical issues and concepts together with their commercial implications in order to support the team in reaching a successful outcome.
Experience
- Significant demonstrable experience of managing a number of project managers and multi-disciplinary technical project teams working on a major investment programmes with a value >£50m.
- Proven experience of managing complex engineering projects of > 100M£ exposure
- Proven delivery of Health and Safety strategies that mitigate the risk of exposure to hazards of personnel and mitigate plant loss.
- Proven experience of delivering financial control strategies to ensure accurate forecasting, timely accurate payments, accruals and forecasting leading to delivery within budget.
- Extended experience of refurbishment and construction involving commissioning of major plant systems as a Project Manager and Project Director.
- Exposure to FIDIC Contracts, ideally yellow book, operating as the 'Engineer' or 'Engineers Representative'
- Prior successful implementation of several projects concurrently with complex interfaces.
- Significant experience of field work in the energy sector working on large scale plant and in a complex environment. Experience in hydro or brownfield projects is an advantage in particular where project delivery is undertaken alongside routine business operations.
- Proven experience in dealing with and satisfying insurance requirements for both CAR and BIPD policies
- Proven experience of influencing effective team working, coaching and mentoring.
- Proven experience of promoting effective engagement at all levels.
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (Chartered status)
- Masters Degree in Engineering
- APMP Practitioner or equivalent
- NEBOSH Certificate or Diploma
- English language to Level 2
Location
It is expected that the successful candidate would need to work at both Dinorwig and Ffestiniog power stations located in the Snowdonia (Eryri) region of Wales.
