Supply and Energy Management ("SEM") is one of the global business units of ENGIE. Its mission is to ensure the competitiveness of the group's business units and develop its own franchise through a comprehensive range of services related to trading and energy management. The Energy Management UK ("EM UK") business platform, within SEM, aims at developing SEM's activities in the UK & Irish markets. It is organized as a fully‑fledged platform with its own Front Office and Support Functions, working together with Expertise Centres and other Business Platforms spread across geographies, to deploy locally the global know‑how and tools of the BU.
Trading Activity
- Commodities traded: Power, Gas and environmental certificates such as REGO, RGGOs, and CO₂.
- Instruments: Commodity forwards, futures, swaps, options, and FX hedges.
- Contract structures: GTMA, NBP, ISDA, IETA, EFET, PPAs, Exchange Rules and bespoke contracts.
Role Overview
The position is within the UK business platform called Energy Management UK ("EM UK") and is also part of the FINOPS Expertise Centre ("EC FINOPS"). You will work closely with colleagues from both teams. The company is normally based at the Broadgate Tower, London, and offers hybrid working.
Accountabilities
Trading Accounting
- IFRS 9 reporting – responsible for reporting MtM accounting entries for monthly financial close, year‑end, statutory accounts and the budget process.
- Analyse MtM variances and provide commentaries during the financial closing and audit processes.
- Ensure all derivative transactions are correctly identified, documented, reported and valued to ensure compliance with IFRS, SEM and ENGIE policies and guidance at all times.
- Liaise with other teams in BP UK to brief them on the IFRS 9 impacts of trading decisions.
- Lead on IFRS accounting standards for BP UK activity (e.g., IFRS 9, 15, 16, IAS 32) and implement updates to accounting standards and policies in operational processes.
- Identify accounting risks and take proactive steps to address them with new processes and controls.
Business Control and Analysis
- Develop profitability analysis to support the business review process, including deep dives into various business and accounting issues.
- Create new reports, KPIs and reconciliations and embed them into business processes.
New Business Support
- Ensure trading transactions are structured and booked to meet the most optimal and compliant derivative accounting for the group.
- Analyze, agree and document the accounting treatment of new business in a timely manner and ensure booking follows agreed treatment.
Cost Control
- Manage the monthly opex accounting process and the annual opex budgeting process.
- Liaise with the SEM cost control teams to report BP’s opex accurately and manage within budget while keeping budget holders updated on spend.
Finance Operations
- Provide cover to the accounting team during busy periods and annual/sick leave.
- Process invoices and payment runs, accounting journals, cash collateral payments and similar tasks.
Project Work
- Lead continuous improvement processes and controls to keep them fit for purpose.
- Represent FINOPS in various projects and committees and respond to other reasonable reporting and project requests.
Integration within EC FINOPS / Finance Line
You are expected to liaise with and promote the integration of BP UK within the EC FINOPS and finance line communities across ENGIE.
Skills and Competencies
- Relevant professional experience in the energy industry and/or trading.
- Analytical and quantitative skills, combined with a hands‑on approach.
- Team‑player – eager to share information with different departments and coordinate with the front office.
- Advanced knowledge of office tools like Excel and information systems (SAP, Orchestrade).
- Experience with data analytics tools (VBA, Python, Dataiku) is advantageous.
- Well organised, proactive and able to manage multiple tight deadlines.
- Assertive, inquisitive, stress resistant and high integrity.
- Pragmatic, logical attitude combined with problem‑solving skills.
- Client‑focused mindset with a desire to deliver practical solutions.
- Strong business drive, tenacious, with a desire to learn and coordinate inputs/actions of various units.
- Excellent communication – articulate and clear, including to non‑accountants (write accounting papers).
Experience
- 5 or more years in Finance roles in the energy industry and/or a trading environment with experience in Mark‑to‑Market accounting.
- Good understanding of the UK energy market is a plus.
- Ability to balance accounting and control requirements with the commercial needs of the organisation.
- Experience interpreting complex contracts and applying IFRS (IAS 39 & other relevant) standards.
- Experience implementing accounting standard and policy changes within a business area.
Qualifications
- University degree in finance, economics or related field.
- Post‑degree accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
