Key Responsibilities

Lessons: Plan and teach functional skills in English, mathematics, and ICT, ensuring lessons are accessible, engaging, and relevant to each pupil’s needs and abilities.
- Promote Life Skills: Help students develop the practical skills necessary for everyday life, further education, and the workplace.
- Support Individual Progress: Adapt teaching methods and resources to address the diverse needs of pupils, including those with autism, learning difficulties, and SEMH challenges.
- Monitor and Assess Performance: Track and record student progress, providing regular feedback to pupils, parents, and the wider team.
- Collaborate with Staff: Work closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to deliver cohesive, multidisciplinary support.
- Implement Behaviour Management Strategies: Use positive reinforcement and other techniques to foster engagement and self-regulation.
- Prepare Students for Accreditation: Support pupils in working towards functional skills qualifications and other appropriate accreditations.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- A relevant teaching qualification, such as PGCE, Cert Ed, or Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET).
- Experience teaching functional skills in English, mathematics, and ICT, ideally within an SEN or alternative education setting.
- Knowledge of the functional skills curriculum and its application to a special needs context.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Empathy, patience, and resilience to support students through challenges and celebrate their successes.
- The ability to use a variety of teaching methods and resources to accommodate different learning styles.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
