We are recruiting for a dedicated and resilient Behaviour Support Worker to join a specialist SEMH provision in Halifax, West Yorkshire on a full-time, temp-to-perm basis.
This is a rewarding opportunity to support young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them to manage behaviour, regulate emotions, and overcome barriers linked to trauma and adverse childhood experiences.
About the School
This specialist provision supports pupils aged 7–16 with SEMH needs and additional complexities, including Autism. The school provides a safe, structured, and trauma-informed environment, where students are supported to rebuild trust, develop coping strategies, and re‑engage with education. The setting places a strong emphasis on relationships, consistency, and emotional wellbeing, with staff working collaboratively to support each pupil’s individual journey.
The Role
As a Behaviour Support Worker, you will:
- Support students on a 1:1 and small group basis
- Help manage and de‑escalate challenging behaviours using a calm and consistent approach
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils
- Support students in understanding and regulating their emotions
- Work closely with teaching staff and therapists to deliver tailored support strategies
- Assist in the classroom and during structured and unstructured times
- Contribute to behaviour plans and pastoral support
A key part of this role involves understanding and responding to trauma‑related behaviours, helping pupils to process experiences and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
Requirements
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEN, or behavioural needs (education, care, youth work, or similar)
- Strong behaviour management and de‑escalation skills
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach
- Understanding of trauma‑informed practice (or willingness to learn)
- Ability to build strong, professional relationships with vulnerable young people
- Team player with a proactive attitude
